Why are we financing their reconstruction again?

Baghdad had a $29 billion budget surplus between 2005 to 2007. With the price of crude roughly doubling in the past year, Iraq's surplus for 2008 is expected to run between $38 billion and $50 billion, according to a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The United States has put about $48 billion toward reconstruction since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, auditors reported. About $23 billion of that was spent on the oil and electricity industries, water systems and security.
Iraq spent $3.9 billion on those sectors from 2005 through April 2008, according to the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress.

Iraq's oil-fueled surplus could hit $80 billion, report says - CNN.com

I'd be willing to give Iraq another 100 billion if they would offer to adopt Pelosi and Reid.

just think, if we were allowed to drill our own oil, we'd have nice surpluses like that as well.

Let's see. We have swelling budget deficits and national debt. Iraq has swelling surpluses.

Sounds like victory to me.

Can we leave now?

If they call within the next 30 minutes, I would give them all that ... plus Berkeley, CA as my free gift.

The only thing mildly redeeming about Berkeley is Chez Panisse...if you could please move that restaurant before you give it away, I would appreciate it.

let Droski stay. As long as UT isn't playing Cal, he's a pretty entertaining chap to have around.

Good idea. Plus, the Iraqis would sour on the deal if we offered him. They would suspect we were trying to pull a fast one on them.

We're definitely for giving away anything with a French handle. Go elsewhere and get some American food.

It may have a French handle, but it was essentially the first eat-local restaurant, so I am going to say that it is pretty American, save the name. Besides, it was started by Alice Waters - doesn't sound too French to me. I could do without the name...but the name came from a character in movies...movies are pretty American :).

On second thought, perhaps we should offer Berkeley to the Taliban. The city would be a lot quieter under Shariah law.

not a bad idea. those code pinkos would look better under a full burqa.
