Whoohoo! The IRL is coming to do some testing at Barber (10 minutes from my house). They'll be here Oct. 12th (Friday and I have the day off).

Hopefully, they are looking at adding Barber to the schedule

:dance2:

Anyone live close to Bham? Come on down.

Most likely they won't add a date there since the fan capacity isn't that great.

There are no, I repeat no grandstands. You could cram 40k max in there (and that would be tight). I know that might be a lot for some IRL races but it's not set up for big spectator events at this time.

On the other hand, it is an outstanding track and a great place to watch a race - bring a chair, a cooler full of your favorite beverage and start lounging.

never been but it sounds very much like you are describing Road Atlanta.

there has also been talk of a Daytona infield course race.

From the pics I've seen of RA, much more attention has been placed on landscaping and fan viewing at Barber. All the fan viewing points are from elevated areas - in the big turns, they have hillside bowls that are tiered so you can sit flat on the hillside. There are spots where you can see about 70% of the course.

It's fan friendly but no grandstands.

do you think an IRL date could afford them a chance to build grandstands on the start/finish line and maybe one or two other areas? what are the rest of the facilities like (ie. parking, garage area, roads in and out, etc.)?

besides, it's not like Watkins Glenn or Road America are chock full of them. the only reason Sonoma has as many as they do is because it is also an NHRA facility when NASCAR and the IRL aren't there. same with Portland.

part of the beauty of a road course is the ability for fans to camp in one turn all day or move around as the day goes on.

The guy who built it is pretty idiosyncratic so it's hard to tell.

However, he almost had a deal to bring MotoGP (FIM) there and that would bring serious crowds.

It's a pretty technical and narrow track - one of the concerns for MotoGP was if it was saftey qualified for the high speeds. Evidently MotoGP has a higher top end than AMA Superbike.

I'm looking forward to seeing what IRL traffic looks like on the track - I'll post some pics.
