you know, on one of the sports shows here in Charlotte yesterday afternoon, they had cliff ellis on and he was talking about the evolution of SEC basketball. and he had a couple of good points...he was comparing it ACC bball...so that's the frame of reference here.......
in regards to road games in both conferences.......he basically said that traditionally, the ACC has always had difficulty in the league at stealing road wins, that given the tradition of some of the programs in that conf. that the fans, support and road game atmospheres are quite different than some other conferences and getting a road win even at some of the so called 2nd tier teams is quite difficult. He went on to say that was not the case in the SEC. historicaly, the SEC, save KY, has not been a tradition rich, fan frenzy kind of bball league, so teams could, in the past, go to a TN, AU, BAma, LSU, etc...and get the road wins that ACC teams could not always pull off at say GT, NCSU, UVA, MD etc...
he did say that this was changing and changing fast. KY and Vandy he said were always tough to go to and get a W. and now, programs like UF and TN, thanks to Billy Donnovan and Bruce Pearl, fan interest is not approaching the same type level at MORE schools in the SEC, so getting those road wins is now getting tougher and tougher....and that it's bleeding over to the other schools like Auburn, Bama, LSU etc.....
Basically, that we are now witnessing the evolution of SEC mens Bball into a real force, and the reason why is that the SEC now has a group of coaches and they are getting the types of players now that can truly compete at the same level, across the board, as some of the more traditon rich conf. and programs.
it was a very interesting interview, and i really thought he had a good point....
and this year with teams like Vandy and Auburn protecting their home courts, that's just proof of that evolution. and in the end, this will all be very good for the SEC going forward....
