Is d-line movement that draws a false start now called as offsides?

Saw that and wondered the same. Ga d- line does it almost every play but they move horizontally and don’t have it called.

Hell, that whole rigamarole about how the defensive line can move around or jump as a unit to create false starts, but the offense can't move a muscle once they're set without being penalized, is terribly confusing anyway.

UGA has feasted on having their DL move as a unit before the snap to draw cheap penalties this year. Feels like there's got to be a bit of a line drawn there.

ARTICLE 2.
After the ball is ready for play, offside occurs (Rule 7-1-5) when a defensive player:
  1. Is in or beyond the neutral zone when the ball is legally snapped;
  2. Contacts an opponent beyond the neutral zone before the ball is snapped;
  3. Contacts the ball before it is snapped;
  4. Threatens an offensive lineman, causing an immediate reaction, before the ball is snapped (A.R. 7-1-3-V Note);
  5. Crosses the neutral zone and charges toward a Team A back (A.R. 7-1-5-III); or
  6. Is not behind his restraining line when the ball is legally free-kicked. Offside occurs when one or more players of the kicking team are not behind their restraining line when the ball is legally free-kicked (Exception: The kicker and holder are not offside when they are beyond their restraining line) (Rule 6-1-2).

I have heard announcers say that defensive line shifts, where the entire line moves before the snap, is not allowed anymore, but I see teams do it all the time this year and still not penalized. I don’t understand when it is and when it isn’t a penalty. I don’t think the refs understand either.

I screamed almost as loud over that call as I did on that bull**** 4th down spot or was it the chicken**** face mask call? Actually I think I screamed the loudest over the downfield "holding" call. Anyway, I have lost my voice screaming at SEC officials.

If this is the case, then every time Ga does their DL shift to cause teams to false start it ought to be a penalty on the defense. But I agree, if the Defensive player doesn't enter the neutral zone it shouldn't be a penalty on the D.

I saw a bunch of this called week one and 2 and announcers said it was a new point of emphasis. They seemed to stop calling it after that weekend.

That was one of the more confusing calls I saw last night. The UT d lineman flinched but didn't enter the neutral zone, the OL then jumped and we got called for offsides. What did I miss?
Georgia does it all the time on defense. They call it the shift, which is done to cause the O line to flinch. I have not seen one single offside call on Georgia and they have been doing it for years.

Lateral movement is legal. The OL has to be disciplined.

That phantom first down was just as bad

It was a bad call. I laughed when they went out of their way not to call Alabama for the second delay of game in a row, even though the clock was clearly on 0 before the snap. Then we sacked Milroe and he grounded the ball and it cost them way more than the delay did.

Georgia did it yesterday and the stand up edge looked like he was moving forward

Yes you're right ....the right tackle flinched 2 times and Vols flagged offsides....
It was great to see the team stay composed and get win

Those refs apparently love throwing flags. Both sides were called for stupid penalties.

I did not see that but usually its because the defense is clapping or making a similar sound to the QB trying to cause confusion?

Then they missed blatantly obvious ones like Brazzell's face mask getting grabbed in the endzone on his td catch. If they'd overturned that catch and not called that penalty, it would have been completely game altering.

It's not illegal, and it's done primarily to confuse the blocking assignments of the offensive line as to their personnel and gap responsibilities with the secondary effect that it often causes the other teams to false start, particularly in a hostile road environment. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it.

If this is the case Georgia should be called for that BS stunt they do.
