If anybody didn't already know Eric Lehnsherr is Magneto, they should probably be disqualified from commenting.

Professor X is MLK Jr and Magneto is Malcom X.

The pop culture reference.....nice

Primarily focusing on his holocaust experience.

The best place to start IMHO is this take this quote by Magneto talking to Pyro in X2 in reference to themselves vs humans;

"You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different."

What got him to this point?

His holocaust experience is detailed in the comic

Also his marriage

Why would the "how" matter? Think about it; he was a victim of a "master race" that thought itself literally better. Now it is Eric himself that holds that very view for he and his. He has become what he has hated and feared as a result of his experience.

Does understanding why he became so change the fact, or the downside, of his being so?

I just saw X-Men First Class recently. I was never much of a comic book reader so it was my first intro into that much of his back story.

I honestly think I would have joined him. Of course, I always said that if I were Luke in SW, me and my old man would have ruled the galaxy.

Absolutely, why?

This, If I were Magneto I wouldnt show the kindness he does.

On a completely unrelated note, why didnt Charles just use telepathy to stop those ships from firing?

The evolution of becoming what you hate

In Eric's case it's fairly straghtforward. He and his were persecuted for "what they were". He fears history repeating itself in another context. It's important to note that Xavier shares many of the same concerns (acceptance between mutants and humans) as Eric but, as I pointed out earlier, it's the fact that Eric demonstrates ever increasing disdain for humans in general that casts him as a villain. He and his are better and more deserving than the "mere" humans. This of course justifies most any action against those humans.*

Sympathetic bad guys are always more interesting. The whole first part of the SW story was how some kid from some backwater desert planet became the evil enforcer for a galactic empire.

*I've been out of the comics loop for a long time but storylines often have characters weaving in and out of the good guy/bad guy role. Keeping things ambiguous helps. Lots of "good guys" with some pretty ragged edges out there; Wolverine, Punisher, Ghostrider, etc.

And you said I was a huge nerd?

He's a bad guy, but as is with most villans something pushed him over the edge. I would think the Holocaust would do it.

Did I really say that?

I do not consider that an insult FWIW.

I know. Remember the SW thread a year or two ago, when I said SW was about daddy issues? You did then. It's ok, my therapist says I'm handling it better. :hi:

Just busting your chops.
