Is it crazy to spend $1300+ to paint a 2000 Honda Accord with only 160K miles on it if you are extremely familiar with said car and it's potential issues? And is obviously worth more to you now, working than if sold?

Depends on how long you plan to keep it. It’s most always cheaper to repair cars versus buying a new one but new ones are nice

So that’s what 2 1/2 months of a new car payment?
Paint it

Heck no. There are people who spend 2x that amount on oversized mudder tires on trucks which never go offroad.
A paint job is cheaper than car pmts over several years.

For a smart person, old cars are about getting the service from it you want for the least acceptable cost. So the age and value of the car are both irrelevant. However, the age is a factor in the service you get. You can decide. The paint bothers you and only you know if that bother is worth $1300. It probably wouldn’t be worth it to me.

For a dumb person, yes, it’s crazy. You could put your name on some papers and be driving a brand new suburban instead.

As an owner of an 05 Acura TSX (an Accord) with 153k planning to keep it until the wheels fall off, paint it! Like someone else said, people waste more money than that lifting their dumb huge trucks and then complaining about gas prices!

I wouldn’t buy new, it’s just too expensive for me at this time. I would consider buying used but even when you do that you know nothing about that car and what could fail on it. That’s me rationalizing painting the car. That being said, where in Knoxville would you get it painted?

I don't know about Knoxville but when I need specialist service I call around the larger independent used car lots and ask who they use. That's how I found my windshield guy.

There is a place by AAMCO on Kingston Pike that advertises car painting for $299 or something like that. No knowledge of how well done (or bad) the jobs are. I just see the sign everyday driving to work.

Might have been cheaper to get it wrapped

I had another friend mention this but I’ve only done minimal research on it. What little I read said $2000 would be the cheapest wrap job for a sedan, average is usually $3000 to $3500 for a wrap.

I just a bought a 2000 Chevy Z-71 for 4500 and 187K miles the only issue is some rust on the rocker panels. I needed a truck on the side def not going to be my regular everyday ride but a work truck and will come in handy when I need to use it.

I went thru my car rollover process a couple of years ago. 05 Accord V6 meticulously maintained with about 160K miles.Started having minor issues and repairs and just having a 15 year old car made me pull the trigger. Wish I had just kept it as a driver because that car will be on the road for a long time.
In early 80s had my car painted twice by Earl Scheib twice for $99 as the second time was a result of peeling in first year. The paint was a mm thick by that point lol

I will never not have a truck in my stable of vehicles.

My dad had a late '90s Accord that logged over 350,000 miles before developing enough issues that he sold it.

Had the timing chain done a couple years ago on my TSX. Went ahead and did a tune up, water pump, and belt while they were in there. Replaced the starter myself after that. Replaced cv joint. Probably do rear pads and rotors this summer. Clutch has about 80k on it it'll need replaced soon. Maybe. I don't drive it hard. 153k miles. Sure I could sell it and make a few grand maybe but cars are depreciating assets as everyone knows, might as well drive it until its killed.
