Now I get it when they target younger kids. I get it when they target desk jockeys. I just don't understand targeting the group of people that are probably in better shape (as a whole) than most everyone else.

Could this not be handled by their superiors? Do they not have to hit certain finess reqs? I ask because I know quite a few military people and they are definitely not ones I would tell to eat a salad

UPDATE 1-Pentagon attacks obesity with new food choices | Reuters

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Obese Americans in the military are a national security hazard and U.S. first lady Michelle Obama wants to see that change.
Obama, who has led a healthy eating and fitness program for children for two years, lent her voice on Thursday to the military's efforts to overhaul the food it serves.

There are more fattys in the service than you might think. Especially in the USN and USAF. I have had to counsel many sailors due to being overweight. Ive also seen many being promoted who couldnt pass a PRT to save their life.

It's poor leadership and nothing more. Hard for NCO's to motivate their soldiers when they're fat sh!t bags themselves. Many just aren't self-motivators. The kids these days just wanna play COD and crap like that.

If my soldiers can't/wont motivate themselves, they're ass belongs to me. PT two times a day, for as long as it takes. Change the diet all you want. Nothing will change, it all starts at the lowest level. Not the other way around.

Completely agree. I would personally hold my E6 and E5's accountable if any of their guys failed measurement or PRT. It would reflect in their FitReps

Glad I don't have to deal with privates anymore. I don't have the "kind more gentler army" mentality.

You're part of the best military in the world. Act like it.

I can say from personal observation that there are many out of shape people in the AF. I work with some of them everyday and they irritate the **** out of me.

I work out there occasionally. I surveyed for several of the new buildings out there. Laid out some of the stuff in the back around the gun ranges.

My grandaddy (retired 11th AB) was stationed there when he retired, my daddy lived there for a few years when he was young.

Same thing with the USN. I saw a guy once on a ship who could barely get through a hatch he was so fat. It pissed me off because the guy was a Chief and the example he was setting was terrible. I honestly havent seen too many out of shape USA or USMC personnel in my time. Mainly only the USAF and USN and I think that has a lot to do with the cultures of each branch.

Oh ok, we do a lot of support for the 101st there. We'll have to go out for a beer the next time I am up that way beech

I guess I run into the younger guys more when out and few of them are over-weight (mostly Navy on one side of the water and AF on the other). My neighbor is an AF officer and he runs miles every day and is in great shape. However they do seem much different than my Army friends

I just think a top-down order to get in shape or get out would work better than the first lady replacing pizza with a salad.

My cousin says the same.

He's 45 and still "picks em up, and puts em down" (as he likes to call it) for 4 mi. everyday.

Dont want to kick people out, just make advancement more difficult. The reason you wont see them kicking people out is obvious when you look at the numbers of enlisted and the mission requirements. Unless things have changed drastically since I medically retired in 08, in the USN you can be overweight but very productive in all other areas and it not be a huge problem.
