Pete Sessions, the chair of the House GOP fundraising committee says that Romney's personal finances are "fair game" and that he should release more returns. Former RNC chair Haley Barbour says the same thing. Over the weekend two prominent conservative commentators -- Kristol and Will -- call his refusal to provide more returns stupid and imply there must be something so bad in them that it is worth this controversy.
I jokingly posted in the tax returns thread that this could pave the way for Palin to swoop in and try to steal the nomination at the convention. I see many on here posting that they aren't going to vote at all, or vote for a libertarian to send a message to the party that they want more conservative candidates.
My question, quite apart from the issue of the tax returns itself, is whether there is such a level of discontent with Romney as the nominee that these forces are starting to coalesce and that there might be some effort in Tampa to take this away from him?
I am quite serious. I cannot ever recall seeing such a level of rumbling in the background surrounding a POTUS nominee as I see with Romney and the GOP.
