Is the far right so dissatisfied with Romney that they are undermining him?

Pete Sessions, the chair of the House GOP fundraising committee says that Romney's personal finances are "fair game" and that he should release more returns. Former RNC chair Haley Barbour says the same thing. Over the weekend two prominent conservative commentators -- Kristol and Will -- call his refusal to provide more returns stupid and imply there must be something so bad in them that it is worth this controversy.

I jokingly posted in the tax returns thread that this could pave the way for Palin to swoop in and try to steal the nomination at the convention. I see many on here posting that they aren't going to vote at all, or vote for a libertarian to send a message to the party that they want more conservative candidates.

My question, quite apart from the issue of the tax returns itself, is whether there is such a level of discontent with Romney as the nominee that these forces are starting to coalesce and that there might be some effort in Tampa to take this away from him?

I am quite serious. I cannot ever recall seeing such a level of rumbling in the background surrounding a POTUS nominee as I see with Romney and the GOP.

Laughable - what about all the Dems saying lay off Bain? What about Bill Clinton and others saying don't raise any taxes in a week economy. We have weekly defections from Obama and you don't say squat but now you believe the right is going to try to ditch Romney?

Sure, plenty of people on the left are unhappy with Obama and some so much so that they will not show up in November. Both sides can't appeal to all their constituencies across the board.

My question is whether there is enough disenchantment with Romney to make a change before he secures the nomination.

No. Wishful thinking on your part.

You cannot be this dumb.

You don't find the level of public criticism of him from within his own party and conservative commentators to be well above routine levels for this point in the cycle?

So using that as your guidelines, you think Randall Terry is going to be the democratic nominee?

The same is being leveled at Obama yet you think it is virtually meaningless.

Hell, one of his top fund raisers came out the other day and said Obama needs to stop demonizing business and capitalism.

lg, feel free to do with this information as you wish but you and gs are the only two people on this board who I can tell immediately when a thread was started by you without looking at the op on mobile

That is indeed alarming.

However, I do wonder if there isn't a large contingent of power brokers within the party who would get behind an effort to draft someone else come Tampa.

I think there is a sort of displacement going on. We complain about the national leaders or candidates but in fact it is the process of how they got selected that is bringing about collective dissatisfaction. And, of course, the process is hidden from most of us.

I think it is unlikely.

But more likely this year than in years past.

If Romney is trailing by 10 + points come end of next week, well ....

It's not unlikely. Michelle bachmann stringing educated remarks together is unlikely.

Romney getting the nomination is a metaphysical certitude
