Is this a Tennessee vs. Kentucky confrence this season?

Tennessee looked great against Purdue, despite the loss. Purdue is number 6 in the nation and the best the Big Ten has to offer so far this season(granted that UF already took down MSU). And Kentucky this season is a top 5 team with plenty of depth and upside despite the youth. I would bet any amount of money that by the time confrence play rolls around, both Kentucky and Tennessee will be rolling. I just cant see any of the other SEC teams competing at the same level as the Cats or the Vols. Miss State was supposed to be a top 15 team but they have yet to get Sidney eligible and have yet to prove anything to anyone, considering they suffered an early home loss to Rider(a team UK beat by over 30 I believe). South Carolina, UF, and Vandy are all tournament teams IMO, but I just dont see them competing for the crown in the SEC east, and the SEC west this season appears to be a trainwreck, with LSU, Arkansas, Bama, and Auburn all even more down this season than usual. It just seems to me like the confrence is going to come down to Kentucky and Tennessee this season when it's all said and done. Any thoughts?

I think Vandy is pretty deep. Kevin Stallings is as confident about his depth as he ever has been. Miss St. is going to be there in March, but the early leaders in the clubhouse for the regular season championship should be UK and UT. Once the freshmen gel at UK, I think it is theirs to lose.

I don't see USCjr or Vandy being tournament teams at this point. At this point, I would say that the tourney teams are UF, UT, UK, and Ole Miss.

I totally agree! The Big Blue and the Big Orange will lose at least 3-4 games in the conference. Vols and UK split their games with each other. Should be interesting to see who is the winner of the SEC East. Would really be nice to see the Big Orange get the nod! GO VOLS! Can the Vols duplicate their season from 2 years ago which was 31-5? I think the Vols will win at least 25 by the time the SEC Conference playoffs take place.
Can the Vols continue their mastery over the Gators in basketball? Sure would be AWESOME!

There are lots more very good teams in the SEC this year than last.

Miss State with Sidney could easily beat UT or UK.
UF will be a tough match up for both teams.
Vanderbilt could beat either, they have wins against Arizona and St. Mary's on the road and that is without their stud freshman really getting dialed in yet.
Ole Miss also has a very good club this year.

So no, I think UT and UK are the leaders, but it is not a foregone conclusion that one of the two will win the conference.

You throw the words "very good" around like its confetti. There are barely 2 VERY GOOD (key word, very) teams counting UK and UT in the SEC. The hype you give Vandy, Florida, and Miss St is unwarranted, at least at this point. The SEC will have a bunch of average teams and as a whole will be mediocre again, barring the two teams mentioned at the beginning.

I think Vanderbilt is pretty good, but giving them credit for beating the worst Arizona team in a quarter century on a neutral floor is comical. Cincinnati showed the Commodores have plenty of weaknesses. Ole Miss gets a chance two days before Christmas to establish themselves as a legit Top 25 team.

Agreed on both accounts. It was just the giving credit to Vandy (because Zona is terrible) and Miss St (after getting drilled at home by Rider) that got me. Neither are "very good".

How many tourney teams do we put in. 4/5?

I'm confident Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss will make the field. Florida should do well enough in league play to use the Florida State and Michigan State wins to get in. Starting to think Mississippi State is more like the team that spent the '08-'09 regular season mired in mediocrity than the one that won the SEC Tournament. They did beat a decent Old Dominion team in the South Padre consolation game, but the jury is out.

This Arizona squad will have a better year than Arizona 86-87 and Arizona under O'Neill 2007-8.

No mention of the Vanderbilt win over St. Mary's on the road?

I know that Miss. State was a popular pick early in the year, but it seems like Sidney is going to have to be Michael Jordanesque to take them from losing to Rider at home by 15 to the 'AAs.

I'll believe the 'AA is going to clear Sidney when I see it. They know if they do, they are admitting their amateurism rules are an abject farce.

Jordanesque is certainly a difficult standard. But Sidney is a uniquely talented player.

A friend/colleague of mine -- whose basketball judgment I trust completely -- saw Sidney play against Jeremy Tyler last year and was pretty much in awe of Sidney. He was in my office the following Monday for a half hour talking about how Sidney dominated Tyler in every aspect of the game, and how he had never seen a big man with ball skills like that.

He may very well be a great player; my point is that he's going to have to be to put them into the tourney.

The only thing saving Arizona from a twenty loss season is the fact the PAC 10 isn't significantly better than the Sun Belt.

Anyone want to quote this so Hat can see it and predict how many losses Arizona will have this year?

Don't tempt Hat, he will make you look so stupid it will become your nickname. Do you want to be called stupid as a nickname because of your mental limitations? Then why call Chism "Wheezy"?

No its not-to the OP....Uf will have something to say about that. I predict that Fla will win 2 of their 4 games against UK/UT...

I really like that Mr. T.

Basketvolsfan, Hat is wrong about Arizona. He is already somewhat on the record in terms of saying it will be the worst team in 25 years, he now has also suggested that they will not make the tournament, but like his St. Mary's prediction he left a qualifier in there so he can back out if they do make the tournament.

The AZ team I watched was awful.
