I’ve been watching football for a long time. I’ve always thought that a good defense was necessary for a good team. In fact, defense wins championships. Last year I started having doubts about my old thinking and I could see the advantages of an offensive team. I was convinced after Florida, and completely sold after LSU. Heupel’s offense puts so much pressure on other teams to score they make mistakes. And believe it or not, takes the pressure off our defense. All they have to do is make a few stops or creat a turnover or two and the opponent is in trouble. I’m sold on offensive teams and the advantage of the Heupel system. And it’s fun too.

You might be short changing our D a little bit. We are good enough to take away the run and make a team 1 dimensional. We held florida running backs to 79 yards. We stuffed LSU and made them throw. When we stabilize the secondary, we will have a very good defense. We made it real hard for bama to run last night.

A good defense still will win championships. We can't play first to 50 wins like we did against Bama against all the top teams. I am loving the product on the field and by no means a negavol but if we could stop a few more third downs and get off the field we would be unstoppable. Our pass d was the only thing keeping Bama in the game. These guys have came so far in 2 years its unbelievable. I can't wait to see who the coach brings in on d to sure it up but man this year has been exciting. I hope he hangs 40+ on all the teams the rest of the year.

One thing for sure, and I said this when CJH was hired, the quickest way to regain fan support is with an exciting, high scoring offense. For that reason, and that reason alone, I wasn't disappointed in the hire.

I never expected he could accomplish what he has done. In fact I don't know if a team has ever turned around this fast. And it was when some of the better players were leaving for other schools and the program was in what seemed to be total disarray.

I agree. Gibbs is elite and that is a very, very good offensive line we faced. Obviously our secondary play is egregious but we were missing 3 starters and holding them to under 120 or whatever rushing is no small feat. Also our pass rush was better than Bama’s.

Agreed. It’s the way that the game has evolved to be. Our offense is so deadly that if our D can just hold the other team once or twice and maybe force a FG instead of a touchdown it gets the job done.

Our defense WILL continue to get better as we land more recruits on that side of the ball. Then it will really be frustrating for other teams. But OP is correct, our defense needs to be able to just get a few key stops throughout the game and the offense can take care of the rest.

Our defense is getting better each week but they are at a disadvantage as fast as our offense operates and scores. They don't get much of a rest.

When your defense gives up 42 you need an offense that will score more. We have that offense.

52 is a lot, but how many more could we have scored if we had played a cleaner game on offense.

As for defense, I’d rather send heat and get burnt than drop into coverage and get burnt.

Georgia is still the prime example of Defense winning championships. If two high powered offenses go at it (ala a playoff game with two top 4 teams) and neither have a great defense, it's a shootout last man with the ball wins kind of game, which honestly, can definitely be controlled with coaching, but also could come down to a coin flip. Not a situation you want to put a National Title on.

Tennessee's offense is so potent, it forces other team's offense to play against Tennessee's offense, not defense! Because we score so quickly, it forces opposing team's offenses to have to try and match us 1:1 in scoring when many of them arent equipped to do that.

Even before yesterday's game, we saw how much pressure our offense puts on other teams. It forces them to go for it on 4th downs and not kick FGs

I no longer think defense wins championships due to the rules right now which greatly favor the offense. Rules like PI, being about to push runners and not being able to pummel ball carriers really favor offenses. Even Saban has given up on emphasizing defense as he feels you can't really stop anyone anymore. He's seen offenses led by guys like Johnny Manziel, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson give him fits. You build your offense first now in football

What is your definition of old timer?

I don't care about offense or defense. I want a solid strategy, excellent execution and no gimmicks. We have that in spades right now.

IMHO the gimmicks and flawed strategy were Jones downfall to say the least. That is why I was sold on Jones. The other two could not execute themselves let alone a team. I don't think they really had a sound strategy either when the only way to win is with top talent.

When you see the real thing you know it. Don't judge how they do especially when it is entertaining!

I disagree. That running back, Gibbs, was the only thing keeping Bama in the game. If we could have made them truly one dimensional we would have taken their QB out last night.

The game has to evolve, or it dies. 52-49 isn't the football I knew growing up, but the reality is that it's just harder to stop a good passing attack than a good rushing attack (unless there's a huge talent disparity, like Bama playing the Citadel or something). Even a lot of high school teams spread 'em and shred 'em now. And because all pendulums swing, since everybody throws it so much the base defense is starting to become the nickel, now Kiffin's running the ball 40 times a game at Ole Miss, and in the NFL the Eagles are undefeated by running the ball (with a mobile QB, too) and playing stout D.

My definition is someone who remembers Bowden Wyatt’s teams. I was alive during the Neyland years but have no recollection of his games.

Yeah but having a Heisman winning QB who is damn near impossible to sack can make any defense look bad. Bryce was absolutely dealing out there. When you have an elite offense you just need to make a couple plays a game on defense. We do 2 things at an elite level on defense. That's hit the QB and stopping the run. If u can do those 2 things you'll always give yourself a chance against anybody in college football. The pressure from our offense combined with our run defense made Bama 1 dimensional. That allowed us to put alot of hits on Bryce. If that kid wasn't so good we probably end up with 6-7 sacks last night.

Fl and LSU both passed on us and their qbs aren't near Heisman status. Our pass d is near the bottom of college football. I do agree we can stop the run but we need a passing defense a little better than what we have.

I hate to say it and ever give a Bammer credit, but Bryce Young played an amazing game.

Our defense looks a lot better if they can get him on the ground 4 or 5 of the times he scrambled out of pressure and made a play down the field.

I am not saying the defense was good last night but, if they play like that against lesser teams, the results are going to look better.

The secondary is a and wil be an ongoing problem but the front 4 played great last night.
