It appears increasingly possible that Bama will sign....

4 of the top 10 players on the 2011 Rivals100. Clowney, Wilder, Cyrus, Caloway. That is sick. If the gap in recruiting remains this wide b/t UT and UA, the current streak will grow to rival that of the 70s.

Dooley is obviously establishing a base of solid kids upon which to build the foundation...but at some point SOON he must begin attracting some elite talent that can complete on the field with the likes of these Bama and Florida studs.

Last I heard Wilder was leaning toward FSU

Give him some freaking time. What does he have to sell right now to these kids? They have seen nothing from him. It will take a couple classes of solid, but not great kids to create a foundation. Beyond that, it will take good coaching from this new staff to impress future recruits by winning with lesser talent and developing that lesser talent into NFL prospects.

it's almost like you're suggesting that if bama and florida weren't the kings of college football right now but instead it was nebraska and penn st, then it'd be less important for dooley to sign a great class. it doesn't matter whether bama signs all 10 of the top 10 players in the country or if they sign zero of them.

here's what needs to happen: dooley needs to focus on signing the best possible class that he can, regardless of what our sec neighbors are up to. we'll build a little bit this season and get better. then he needs to go out in 2012 and sign the best possible class he can. rinse and repeat. rinse and repeat. eventually we'll get more 5.8s looking at us, then more 5.9s, then 6.0s. eventually we'll get to an 8-win season, then a 9-win season, then 10.

rebuilding is going to be a process. bama signing a great class for 2011 doesn't change the fact that it still might be 2013 before ut is a double-digit win program.

They also just won the National Championship, I would expect them to be pulling a ton of top level talent. What have we won in the past few years to warrant top level prospects to even take a look at us?

dont be shocked if Clowney ends up at SC. if they manage to field anything resembling an improved team, and i think you will see him stay home.

Wonder what these bama commits are costing?

If you truly don't understand why the idea of Bama or Florida signing great classes is of greater concern to UT than teams such as Penn State or Nebraska signing great classes, I can't help you.

Not a damn thing. Yet the same idiots on this board think we should be pulling 5 and 4 star players in like Bama and Florida. Morons ........

I didn't say I wasn't concerned by them signing great classes. I said I expect our coaches to bust their a**es on the recruiting trail regardless of what everyone else is doing.

If Bama and Florida signed 0 4stars and 0 5stars, would your response be "Alright, well since Florida and Bama aren't tearing it up, it's no big deal that we've got a bunch of 3 stars." Of course not. We'll demand 5stars whether other elite prospects are going to Bama or whether other elite prospects are going to Nebraska.

edited to add:
I've got this image of what it would be like if Dooley thought like you: Dooley is just chillin' in his office, playing spider solitaire, checks out the new article on Rivals, and sees Clowney is leaning to Bama. He says to himself, "Oh d***. I was content with just signing some 3 stars but if Saban is gonna go after top 10 players, then I guess I better try to sign a good class, too. It wasn't urgent before, but NOW I'm gonna get after it."
