It's defense

People are blaming the oddest things on this loss (and others).

Brian Williams? Really? He shot 50% from the floor, pulled 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals in 24 minutes. And zero turnovers.

Hopson? 20 points on 15 shots. Zero turnovers. A block and 2 steals. He wasn't on fire, but he didn't kill us either.

It's defense. We hit 35% from 3, which is fine. We had only 12 turnovers, to 17 assists. We tied them in rebounding, and they're a good rebounding team.

But we can't guard anyone. We can't keep guards out of our lane, we don't rotate right and we get dish-dunked on, and our late help doesn't get back out to the three-point line when they kick it out.

Fix the defense and we're winning this game and Arky by double digits. It's AWFUL.

I agree 100%. This is the reason we are losing games. Period!

Yeah, pretty telling when we have 3 guys hit 20 points(rounded Tobias up from 18) and still lose. But I agree, we got abused in the paint. They had to have had quite a few second chance points as well. The ball screens were killing us.

Their bigs abused us in the second half and their guards drove right by us. That makes it pretty hard to get a stop

I think that our weakness is out. Ball screen! I f other teams ball screen us the way teams have done us this year then we are going to be toast. I don't know what is hard about ball screens? Oh wait, there is nothing hard about them, it is all about effort and want to, and I don't see that from this team.

The offensive woes are helping too, but there's no arguing that our field goal percentage defense has been dreadful. If I heard correctly Florida ended up shooting 50% from the three-point line.

Shoulda hackashacked the bigs and put them on the line. Maybe a 2-1-2 zone with a goon in the middle would have stopped the guards. Perhaps they did this, but I didn't see it. Finally, I hate to place partial blame on the refs BUT their guards were initiating contact, head and shoulder down, and our guys were called for the foul. IMO when a guard initiates the contact, a no call is appropriate. Further, when a guard goes into the lane, he should get mauled - and unless there is a clear punch to the face, there should be no foul. The paint is no place for the little man.

Our defense is laughable... earlier in the season it seemed like Pearl put an emphasis on D, but once they got a taste of success, they stopped playing it! Anyone can score at will against us... I'm extremely disappointed in this team because they got top 10 talent to really do some damage!!! ...JUST PLAY D!!!!

BOA - I noted that #23 hit about 5 running hookshots on our guys. The only thing you can do defend a running hookshot is a) deny the ball or b) poke'em in the eye (see Kareem's birth control goggles).

The lack of structure offensively is just as bad. When it's a critical possession, we don't even come close to getting a good shot.

its still amazes me that we beat villanova by 10+ when they arguably have the best/quickest backcourt in the country...each day that game tape should be rewatched...the ball screen defense was superb as we kept corey fisher and maalik wayns in check all game from penetrating in the paint and contested every 3pt shot

Yes, it is quite obvious that the defense is not what it needs to be all of the time. In fact, the Vols seem to only play defense when they are in danger of getting blown away...
