The media kept telling us that this was the worst loss of the modern era for the Vols, surpassing the 44-0 pasting by Georgia in the 1981 season opener in Athens.

So I like many remember that game in 81 and felt very down and hopeless after that loss too.

Things got better, a lot better. We went to a bowl that year. Hey, the following year we beat #2 Bama, that started a 4 year streak against the Tide after 11 straight losses to the Bear.

Here is John Ward calling that game with Georgia in 1981. Warning:at the 30 second mark there is a very scary look at who I think was Smokey.

Will let Butch figure it out. He gets paid the big bucks for a reason. Our job is to cheer or bellyache depending on the result. :)

Come on man! Since NSD all the talk was that there was no way we matched up against Oregon and no way we would win this game. And saying we will have to "greatly improve" to beat Auburn, Missouri and Vandy is going a bit overboard. Just last week we were supposedly a 6 win team at best and according to you we are now a 5 win team at best just because we got beat by a team everyone knew we had 0% chance of beating.

Oregon is not a good measuring stick, c'mon, they have 3 main things that we dont: speed, talent and depth, (well 4, a quaterback). We started out good, but once they got rolling, there was no stopping them. Some positives are that our Vols came out ready to play, made some good plays on O & D against a very good team, but it didnt take long for our weaknesses to show. I think CBJ and staff had the team prepared as best they could, and it was very obvious once they got up by 3 scores that there was no way we would ever be able to catch them, unless they just imploded, so why get aggressive and show more than you have to? I think for a while they were just trying to keep it simple and get something going. We dont have what we need right now to compete with Oregon, and several other teams weve yet to play. But they are working on it, and so far doing an outstanding job of it, the last thing we need is the fan base to implode and tear down some of the foundation being laid by the staff. Just chill out and give it time. Word of warning, Florida is pretty good, so is Alabama, Georgia and USC...we knew this before the season ever started. And Auburn, Mizz, Kentucky and Vandy will be tough, but winnable games, lets wait and see how this thing ends up before passing judgement and calling for heads to roll. I think we all realize at this stage, Worley needs alot of help to be good, and our O-line, experienced as they may be, are not as talented and dominating as we hoped they would be. Our secondary is talented but inexperienced. Our best LB right now is slow and cant cover crossing routes...too many issues to beat or even compete with a really good team, but hang in there, eventually things will start looking up. Im as frustrated as most of you are, but we have to be real. We are 3 games into this season, and a long way to go, and alot can happen. I have faith that CBJ knows what he is doing, but there is no "magic dust" left, its gonna take one year and one recruiting class at a time. Sports are cyclical, and our times a'comin.

Of course there are many concerns with the team. But throwing in the towel after Oregon is ridiculous. There is not a worse matchup in the nation for our team than this one, and frankly, Oregon needs to be given their due for being pretty terrific this year. The Florida game will tell us a lot more about how far we've come, and how far we need to go. Much better matchup for Tennessee than was Oregon.

The problem is we didn't just get beat. We got smoked. They could have scored 100 on us if they wanted to. We couldn't block, run, pass, pressure the passer, cover anyone, tackle anyone and our special teams sucked. I realize OR is a great team but we were not even a good scrimmage for them. There is not a game on our schedule that we don't have a good shot at losing. That included Vandy, KY, S AL, Auburn, and Mizz.

If we would have been the least bit competitive against OR people would have hope. But quite frankly we looked like a middle school team going up against a high school team.

It depends on how you look at it, but the future is not as bright as it used to be and a nickel ain't worth a dime any more

Exactly.
I don't think its smart to jump ship on Butch right now. But I am also sick of people acting like questioning what happened is so silly because we were supposed to lose. I "knew" we would lose this game, just like I "know" we will lose to Bamer, Florida, Georgia, and S. Carolina. But what I, as a fan, am looking for is some competitive nature. Something different than what we have seen the past few years. Quite frankly the performance against Oregon is in the top 3 or 4 of the worst performances we have seen in the last 4 years. I don't think its going crazy to be very concerned about that.

Our players need to realize that they got badly beaten by an extraordinary team. They also need to realize that most could have played better and made the game more respectable.

We can't give up on Butch but after what I witnessed on Saturday, this team has light years ahead of them in terms of talent, learning the schemes and our coaches have a long way to go. They are not ready for this stage. I do think he can get there as he's a smart guy.

We will.... soon. Butch will get us geared up as the season progresses. Time will tell if he can coach like I think he can.

I have a feeling we might even see a different as soon as this week at Florida.
