Tennessee's third-quarter onslaught in the opener against California
The Volunteers had heard it for eight months. No, make that nine months. They didn't play in December. For the first time in Phillip Fulmer's 14 seasons as head coach, they didn't go to a bowl. Fulmer had his first losing record (5-6).

He didn't like that very much, and he made sure that his players didn't enjoy themselves, either.

Fulmer rehired his close friend, David Cutcliffe, to reshape the offense. The players rededicated themselves to the weight room. They got sick of hearing about the decline of the Vols. They got tired of hearing about how this would the season that the Golden Bears challenged USC for supremacy in the Pac-10.

From the first play, Tennessee became the aggressor. They dominated the first half against Cal, yet led only 14-3 at intermission. By the time 6:29 had elapsed in the third quarter, the Vols led 35-3. Cal tacked on a couple of touchdowns against the scrubs. Tennessee has returned to the top 10. So, too, has Cal, making what Tennessee did in the opener all the more amazing.

I think he got the score wrong. it was 14-0 at half and 35-0 at one point.

Yeah, Ron Gilmore( I think thats his name) was writing on ESPN.com that the Tennessee loss will haunt the enitre Pac-10 the rest of the year. It does say alot for us that Cal has made it back to the top 10 despite such a bad loss to us. It says alot ofr them as well.
It sucks to think that if not for a phantom hit to the QB(Leaks) head call we would be undefeated, have 3 wins over top 10 teams, and probably ranked #2. That call completely changed that game.

Don't bring that bad call up as reasons we lost. Remember, there was a terrible call against Florida on a punt return for a TD that was called back. Those 2 evened out.

We lost to Florida by a point, but it could have easily been worse. So don't blame one bad call for that loss ANYMORE. There were tons of bad/missed calls in the Florida game, and if we had even 50 yards rushing that game, we'd be #2. That's the REAL reason we're 5-1.

Amen - couldn't have said it better myself. That game could have gone either way. What is amazing is how UT had a chance despite not being able to run the ball.

Yeah, -11 yards rushing and only losing by 1 point to any SEC team is very rare.

My bad yall, I didn't realize opinions were outlawed here. But you're do have a point, I'll try not to play the what if game anymore. Its about as pointless as letting a blind man drive your car and then getting mad when he wrecks it.

Opinions aren't outlawed. Your opinion is still there for everyone to see. However, I can disagree with your ridiculous reasoning for why we lost the Florida game. Any person with any kind of football knowledge above what a 3 year old has can tell that while the call was blown on that INT, it was nowhere near the top 3-4 reasons why UT lost that game. It's CLEAR. -11 rushing yards, a weak defensive front, and bad communication in the secondary are all FAR better reasons for why we lost. I'm sure if I wanted to, I could find 10 more reasonable ... reasons.

I didnt feel that UF game was as close as the score. I thought they outplayed us thoroughly

Yes, they did. They outgained us 320-220, and out FD's us 22-13. Florida almost beat themselves with 9 penalties, but without a run game, we couldn't capitalize. Might I add Florida ran the ball 41 times against our defense ... besides Air Force, I can't remember a team running it that often against us in this century.

Would everyone just calm down. When did I ever say it was the only reason. It was huge though. We were coming off a big score, Mitchell puts another one in the endzone and a bad call negates that and completely swung the momemtum of the game. Your all right: conservative play calling in the second half, -11 yards rushing, Ainge intentional grounding instead of taking a sack, excellent UF defense, Florida scoring more points than we did:) , there's alot of reasons. I've never posted on this subject so its the first time I've ever expressed my discontent over how close we were. Its especially hard seeing how we've played since.

Yeah, it was a heartbreaking loss.

But we really shouldn't complain about that bad call, because we were the benefit of one of equal poorness earlier in the game.

Well...the biggest and most obvious reason we lost the UF game...2 points...that's all we needed...If we had those 2 points I'm referring to, we'd have won by one point.

I remember when Wilhoit made the FG to make it 20-14 (I think), I told my buddy that we would regret not getting the TD on that drive. :(

First of all, Ainge getting caught for intentional grounding was no different than taking a sack. That is about the 4th time I have seen a poster on here claim that was a heartbreaker and a terrible play. Tell me this for those of you that do not understand, if we have the ball 1st and 10 on the 20 and Erik gets called for intentional grounding at the 10 yd line, what does that make it? It's 2nd and 20 for those that do not understand football. So, say he doesn't get called for intentional grounding, holds on to the football and takes a sack at the 10. What does that make it? WOW, it would be 2nd and 20. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN A SACK AND INTENTIONAL GROUNDING IN THAT SITUATION!!!!!

If he was going down, he might as well try and throw it at somebody hoping to get bailed out. I thought it was a very smart play and a good try on his part...
