Ivy League to ban tackling during practice

I wonder if this might backfire: if guys aren't as accustomed to taking hits in practice they could be a little more injury prone on game days when they get rocked full speed.

idk about injuries, but I could see ball security being an issue. I am betting nothing can prepare you for getting lit up when going up for a jump ball like getting tackled.

By college, even Ivy League or D3 level, if you don't know how to hit, you aren't going to learn. Basic fundamentals and loving or not loving contact are something you should have by 15-16 years old if you've been playing since Middle School and had a coach worth his salt.

I know the best football team I was ever on, there were 50 of us on the team (out of a school total student body of 400ish) but only about 18-22 of us played consistently. We went full contact one day a week, three in the bye week, and none by the time playoffs rolled around. Every day we spent 5-10 minutes on form tackling drills, and even on the days we went full contact we spent more time with dummies and half speed situations than anything.

Our coach was asked about it one time (because our practices were open to the public and once we hit top 5 in the state rankings lots of people came to games) and his response was "When you know if your team can hit, or likes to hit, you don't want them doing it to each other more than you have to, especially if you don't have a big team. If a team knows how to practice hard and smart, you don't have to waste time on things that just come naturally and risk injury."

My memory may be wrong, but I believe it was Pete Carrol who said his best Trojans team never had a day of full pads the entire season because they knew how to practice and play, so they never had to.

Didn't hurt Dartmouth when they did it starting in 2010. Finished third, second, then tied for first three years in a row.
