I am curious to hear everyone's thoughts on Jabari Davis. This guy was highly recruited and most Vol fans were pleased to sign him if I remember correctly. Now here we are with Jabari entering his Senior season without a whole lot to show for it. Why do you think that is?

Has he just been caught up in the shadow of Cedric Houston?

Does he not have the tools to compete at this level? Although I think we have seen flashes of greatness from him on occaision.

Some people think maybe he should have played fullback. Could that be the case?

Maybe his running style doesn't suit our offense?

Maybe you could blame the o-line not opening enough holes for him to run through?

Any thoughts?

I think Jabari will make alot better pro than a college player if that makes sense. He is a bruiser. Those guys do alright in the NFL, and he has the speed to run away from people. I think J train is a guy who needs 2-30 reps a game as alot of backs do....here at Tennessee he hasent been able to get that. in the NFL as long as your churning out 1st downs they could care less.....in college people want 35-45-60 yard runs. Even the vols coaches have commented on the lack of break away talent.

Go Vols push comes to shove...I wouldnt trade the J Train for anything in Bama lmmfao :worship:

I still can't get over that Syracuse game, Freaky. Saturday was the first time I had ever seen it. Sorry for the off-topic post. I was daydreaming, not hitting the pipe.

I don't remember. '98 was the year I married, so I was probably still meeting new in-laws and relatives. Only something REALLY important would have made me miss a Vol game.

No way I would be meeting inlaws during a football game. You must have really had the "newlywed syndrome".

I don't remember, but I KNOW it must have been something important. I don't miss games for just any ol' reason.

Sure they will be another Peerless just like there was another Gault and another Pickens and so on and so on.

As for Jabari he is a good back but due to the inability of the O-Line, Offensive coaches and an abundant amount of talent at the TB spot no RB has been able to "get inthe Flow of the game".

I sure haven't seen another Pickens, Gault, OR Price. To whom are you referring?

Pickens was another Gault and Price was another Pickens and Meachem is another Price.

I think he should redshirt this season.Ced Houston and G.Riggs are going to get most of the carries and David Yancey has probably earned a few too. It worked out pretty good for Travis Stephens when he redshirted and waited for Henry and Lewis to leave.

I'm with the first poster - I don't think his style is well suited for our offense, nor do I think he gets the carries per game his running style needs to succeed. The fact that our OL has been subpar the last couple of years hasn't helped, either. The benefit to him is that if he does get picked up in a late round by an NFL team, his body hasn't taken the pounding that most graduating RB's have taken and he would be relatively fresh. Plus, he seems to me to be the type that gets stronger as his carries and confidence go up - the kind of guy you want running in the 4th qtr. if you're an NFL coach. He hasn't performed up to expectations thus far in his career but this may be a breakout season for him, and if not, he has the talent alone to be a late round pick and get on with an NFL team next year. Sort of reminds me of Bettis, but that's only the professional Bettis - I don't recall watching him in college at all so I can't compare to that.

What about those fumbles? One on the goal line lost us a game last year. I'm not saying he's not a good back, but he got took out a few times last year because he couldn't hold on to the ball. I you have three good backs one is not holding on to the ball well I guess he won't get his carries. I was wondering though if he was just trying to do much to avoid getting taken out of the game.

Jabari is a fullback. If ever gets drafted that is what he will play.

Not all Blue Chip high school players make a name fo themselves at the D-1 level.

It wouldn't surprise me if he goes to the pros and has a brief career if he gets a little coaching. I can't determine if he has had much direction at UT at his position.

Jabari Davis is a fullback, period. He is a very strong runner, but has little speed. In the pros he migth be a tailback, but at this level he would be a good fullback. Even though we have the guys for the job already, he could start if he wanted to.

...and you believe Jabari Davis could start at fullback based on what?? I'm not saying that you might not be right, but I can't remember him playing a single down at fullback in 3 years. The world is full of running backs who either can't or won't lead block for anybody.

I think that's a good point GAVol. You may think Fullback by looking at his size but I don't think he has the drive or the mentality to be a fullback.

I base my assessment on the fact that he has plenty of strength, but no speed. Davis is just not a tailback, pure and simple. Look at the calibur of player we have had at Fullback: Troy Fleming, Shawn Bryson. Davis does not have what it takes to be an SEC calibur tailback.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but you're just not being fair here. He's not THAT slow. I was reading today that he was clocked at 4.55 in the 40. That's not breakaway speed, but I sure as hell wouldn't get in front of a 235 pounder moving that fast.

It's fair to say that he hasn't yet proven himself to be an every down tailback, but he has been a very capable backup that has stepped in when necessary and done alright.

I can't believe I just used up that much space to defend our backup tailback. . .

Davis could be a world class sprinter, but he does not have football speed. Good power, but not speed.

And I can't believe you did either.
