James Franklin now makes $5.8 million per year

It will be interesting to see if they turn on him if they can't repeat the success of last year. They revered JoPa here and even then he had a lot of people saying he was way over paid. This makes Franklin the highest paid public employee in the state so expectations will be high. I wouldn't mind seeing them continue to be successful--rather them than OSU or Michigan.

Maybe a little premature, but given where they were and the fact he beat out Urbs and Harbaugh for the division and eventual conference championship its hard to complain too much.

If he keeps them in the mix with Mich and OSU for the division Id consider it money well spent.

I'd say yes, he's worth it, but make no mistake - he's getting paid for what he did in the second half of last season (from the Ohio St game to the Rose Bowl). That's a pretty small selection of games. It seems like a long time ago now, but he was actually somewhat on the hot seat after the loss to Michigan last year. They started 2-2 and did not look like an improving program until they beat Ohio State. Amazing how quickly a perception of a coach can change. Very similar dynamic to USC last year, who they coincidentally ended up losing to in that Rose Bowl.

I think he's a hell of a coach just because of what he did at Vandy, but they've only played like a top tier team for a relatively small portion of his tenure at Penn State. He's recruited well, and the Sandusky fallout is completely over, so he should be able to continue it.

Yes. I don't like the guy, but he can coach. I agree having a 3rd party in the Big 10 contending with Mich/OSU is a good thing.

How many does that make in the $5M/year or higher club? Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, Sumlin, Fisher, and Franklin. Any others? Just those 6? Rare air up there.

They were in shambles after the Jerry Sandusky scandal. I thought they might never be relevant again. The fact he turned them around so quickly on a national scale, imo, deems him worth every dollar.

Bill O'Brien kept the job from being a turnaround project. Very minimal drop and was a competitive program when Franklin took over.

The University of Texas' new football coach, Tom Herman is scheduled to receive $28.75 million in basic compensation under financial terms for a five-year contract approved Saturday by the board of regents.
Herman will be paid $5.25 million during the first year of the deal, and his compensation is scheduled to increase by $250,000 in each subsequent year.

Oh yeah, you're right. Herman $5.25M this season, and I think it goes up a bit after that.

So that's 7...plus maybe Kelly at ND.

Harbaugh makes $9+ million.

What has he won?

Definitely not the BIG10 like Franklin.

So yeah. I'd say Franklin is worth it. A bargain even.

I'm not a fan of his, but there is no denying his ability to polish a turd. First Vandy and now post-Sandusky PSU. From the school's perspective, he is definitely worth it.
