Strengths: Jarnell is a big, strong, powerful young man with great potential. Jarnell is big for an 18 year old at 6'9/260, and has man strength already. Jarnell has nice touch in the post and is very physical. He has a nice baby hook with either hand, and can finish well in traffic. He has a very nice face up jump shot, and can hit it as far as 17 feet. Jarnell is a very good rebounder, with a nice 21.1% defensive rebounding percentage and a great 11.1% offensive rebounding percentage. He has very good instincts and does a good job positioning and boxing out. Jarnell has great footwork and shows that offensively and defensively. Jarnell is a very good low post defender, using his leg strength to not be moved around. Jarnell is fearless. He faced multiple first round picks last year, and not only held his own, he outplayed most of them. The most underrated thing about Jarnell is his passing. He can pass the ball out of double teams and in the high post. He throws it at the correct spot. Jarnell is a good shot blocker despite not having great hops. He is excellent at timing shots and has a very quick hop in his vertical. He has a running hook that very few big man in the country can make and can go to it when he needs a bucket. Jarnell is very strong and can get to the line as well as anybody, with an incredible 54.6 free throw rate last year, top five in the country.
Weaknesses: Jarnell is a weak help defender. He seems to be hesitant and that comes with his age, but he needs to hedge harder and not get caught in bad switches like he did last year. He seemed to be stuck in cement sometimes on switches. He turned the ball over too much last year with two a game, and must be more decisive and quicker in the post. Jarnell also needs to add a counter move to his post game to make it more deadly; an up and under or a turnaround jumper would do wonders. He has to improve his free throw shooting. He left too many points on the board, and with his ability to get to the line, has to convert. 54.6% will not get it done. Jarnell is a good finisher, but can improve his left hand in traffic.
Final Thoughts: Jarnell is the most talented player on the team and one of the great talents in the SEC, and has first round NBA potential. He has a good low post game for someone born in 1994, and very good rebounding instincts. He has nice shot blocking potential and can get even better. Jarnell is super strong and uses that to his advantage in multiple facets of the game. He needs to improve his free throw shooting first and foremost and also work some on his low post game. More consistency on his jumper would help. Jarnell is a great kid, extremely hard worker, and wants to be great. He has that "it" factor about him, showing up in big games last year and making big plays. As only a freshman who should have been a high school senior, he was fantastic last year. Jarnell will only get better. Except big things from Jarnell Stokes.
