Jarnell Stokes going to be the best post player since....

Bernard King??? For those of us that were around to watch Bernard play, can you think of anyone else the Vols have had since BK that would rival what I think Stokes is going to bring to the table? Sure, we've only seen him play 17 minutes, but that's all it has taken for me to think he may be the best since Bernard, who IMO is one of the top 2-3 players to ever play in the SEC.

Since is the keyword. His pro career was just as solid. He is 1 or 2 in the SEC for sure...

Good grief! He's played one game.....come on.

You don't trust your ability to evaluate talent?

I don't see why everybody is ripping into the OP for speculating about Stokes' future. What are message boards for?

"Yeah, let's wait until his career is over and then we'll know if he was the best".

And I'm sure that will be an interesting conversation.

Have y'all not read the book "Blink"? Snap judgments are often correct. And none of y'all should go into gambling with that wait-and-see approach.

He said "since Bernard King" smart guy.

Learn to read.

Exactly. I said SINCE Bernard King because in my opinion, there will NEVER be another Bernard King. I grew up watching him play and he, Grunfeld and Jackson were amazing. Too bad the NCAA tourney only let the conference champion in back then. Not only did it make it difficult to get in but your first round game was usually like a Sweet 16 game today. I remember one year we lost to Syracuse in OT in the first round.

By Ted Dekker?

That's actually a good book.

Lots can change between now and the need of his career here I think people are just hesitant to say how good he will be after one game. If janell goes pro after 1 1/2 years obviously what he accomplished here will have been limited. Does he have the talent to be one of the best ever to come through, absolutely. If he is here though only for a year and a half it will be impossible for anyone o consider him as the best ever. He can have a monster year next year 25 15 and 3 a game but if he leaves he won't eclipse some of the others like Houston on king.

At this point Stokes is the best post player we've had since Maymon. Although I will further concede he is better than Major Wingate.

Stokes interior passing showed flashes of brilliance against Kentucky. Our offense thrives on ball screens and getting the ball to the block. If we have the ability to score from either block, and, distribute the ball from the block, it adds a dimension to Tennessee basketball that has not been present for a long while - interior basketball.

I am impressed with Maymon, Hall, and Stokes. On both ends.

If only we could get Tony back to work on the turnovas

The way our 3 post players have played these past 3 games against some of the best posts in the country is very telling. They need to dominate against the lesser talented post they are about to face and take advantage of their abilities. Hopefully the confidence they have gained by hanging with these posts will benefit them going forward.

So I didn't read much of this thread but here is my take...

He is a really great player and has the potential to be huge. You can't judge off of one game for many reasons.

1.) people have not scouted him as much and don't know how to play him
2.) he could have just been on for that game
3.) it is just one game though against a very good team.

So it is a little early to compare him to other greats. The potential is there

He's the best player ever in the SEC. The only player that could rival him is Maravich.

That being said, Stokes is the best talent we've had in the post since Ellis. If he turns out to be that good, we will be seeing some deep tournament runs in the near future

Still early. King scored 24 and had double digit rebounds in his freshman debut. Granted it was against much weaker competition (Wisconsin-Milwaukee, IIRC). We shall soon see.

And had like 50 in his second game, with double digit rebounds. King averaged 25 points/game and 13 rebounds/game for his CAREER at UT.

BTW, Red is a great album

Of course it's too early to tell; I doubt the OP wasn't aware of that. I think Stokes has the potential to be the best since Bernie. Moreso than Tobias IMO.

I think were all getting ahead of ourselves here, however the way Stokes and the team as a whole looked Saturday. If Stanton can come in in next year and play well, and we get another PG in here so Golden can move to his natural SG position we could be pretty darn good. This might be a dumb question but is there any news on Chris Jones, or do we know if he will still try and come here? he's doing very well at NF State.

1. dont hold your breath on stanton being the starting pg next year. safe bet is golen is the start the next 2 years.

2. we will not be bringing in another pg next year that is pretty much a guarantee.

3. chris jones will not be eligible to play for a d1 school until the year of 2013. seeing as how we already have the pg we want for 2013 committed the chance that jones ends up here as well is VERY small.

3-4 definitely come before him. O'neal, Mara., Issel, Allen Houston...just a few.

It's really hard to compare players from different generations. And the sec is so deep, very hard to rank players.

I assume this is in reference to Bernard King. If so, I'm sorry my friend, but Allan Houston does not come before Bernard King.

I respectfully disagree with you on O'neal, Houston and Issel. BK and Maravich best 2 players ever in the SEC.

BTW Big Blue posters, you do know King only lost to the Wildcats 1 time in his career.....
That was the game someone at Memorial Gymnasium threw a ciagarette butt in his hair after he lost as a freshman. After that, BK said he would never lose to KY again. He was right. Phenomenal talent that would have gone down as one of the top 10 NBA players of all-time if not for his ACL injury.

The three greatest players IMO to ever play in the SEC are (in no particular order) Bernard King, Dan Issel, and Pete Maravich.

A 2nd tier exists such as Oneal, Barkley, Mashburn, Houston, Chapman etc. But IMO, those three stand alone.
