COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina is fully replacing its football field less than a week before the season opener after hosting a Jay-Z and Beyonce concert.

Crews trucked in sod from Sugar Hill, Georgia, after the old field had to be removed following the superstar couple's concert last week.

South Carolina staff will spend Monday installing more than 90,000 square feet of Bermuda grass, said Clark Cox, the school's assistant athletic director in charge of turf and landscaping services.

I was just reading about that. It shouldn't be that big of a deal. Fields are replaced mid-season all the time. A couple of years ago in Tampa the Bucs played on Sunday, the Outback Bowl was played on Monday, then the field was completely replaced for the National Title game a week later.

Happened out here at OU when U2 came through some year ago with their absurd 360 stage.

Generally, there's a rider in the contracts for repair/replacement of the field if they damage it. And let's face it, Beyonce/Jay-Z can afford it.

I don't know about it not being a big deal. Generally takes a good 2-4 weeks to fully root. That field is going to be a disaster more than likely. Looks like they got rain coming Thursday and again Saturday.

On a side note my buddy is a DEA and works a lot of the concerts confiscating the illegal memorabilia. They were told they were not to enter the venue and that Beyoncee requested that she did not want to even see a police officer. I am willing to bet those two idiots would change their tune on that if some real stuff did go down. I swear these idiot stars live in a dang fantasy land now.

Seems like a bit of a no win situation; you're not going to pass up letting Jay-Z and Beyonce do a concert because that's a ton of money you make, but you do screw up the field with a short time to fix. They play Coastal Carolina though, so it shouldn't be as big of a deal.

Several stadiums have done it in the past. Seems like USCe knew they were going to have to replace the field. You don’t put down a hard plastic cover in South Carolina in August and expect whatever is under it to survive.

There was. The company putting the concert on is covering the cost.

It's not that big of a deal, and the field will be fine.
