McDonald's All-American Jelan Kendrick is serving an indefinite suspension from the Memphis basketball team while school officials investigate a verbal threat the freshman made to a teammate, Kendrick's former summer coach, Daren Darby, has told CBSSports.com.

A separate source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told CBSSports.com that in addition to the threat -- a threat that was deemed serious enough to report to school officials -- Kendrick has been in multiple fights with teammates since arriving on campus, one of which led to second-year coach Josh Pastner banning Kendrick from the Tigers' preseason trip to the Bahamas. Reached Tuesday by phone, Pastner declined to discuss the details surrounding Kendrick's suspension, saying, "It's a personal matter, and Jelan will be back [with the team] when the matter is resolved."

Quite the squad Pastner is building over there. Half the team may not be eligible.

The entire team is eligible per NCAA Clearinghouse.

Kendrick has some serious emotional problems that his previous HS and AAU coaches have either ignored or allowed him to run from. Pastner could very easily put up with the behavior but has chosen to do what is right by the kid. Hopes are he will begin to change and be playing in the future. According to insiders, there was no crime committed or team rule broken. Just several incidences with teammates that have forced this suspension.

He will be back no big deal and I agree with BPV he is a problem, I just hope Coach Paz can solve it. The young man has a very bright future he just needs to get his head on right.

He went to my high school last year and was really overrated. Didn't care about school or anything, never crashed the boards, and didn't have that good of chemistry with the team. I don't think he would have made any kind of significant impact on their team.
