US soldier removed from Iraq for shooting at Quran - Yahoo! News

BAGHDAD - An American sniper was removed from Iraq after he used a copy of the Quran for target practice, the military said Sunday, a day after a U.S. commander held a formal ceremony apologizing to Sunni tribal leaders.

Probably not the smartest thing to do in these PC times of ours, but still... you are setting a bad precedent if that is all you need to do to get a free ticket home...

The thing that irrates me about this story is that it doesn't tell us if he was successful at hitting his target. They just glossed over that detail...

:ermm:

if it'd been the Torah or the Holy Bible, nothing would have been said. Iraq is a predominantly muslim country but I know there are Christians living there and odds are there are a few Jews as well.

Well, the US is predominantly Christian, yet I bet nothing would have happened here if he would have shot the Bible. Maybe Christians need to start cutting/sawing off a few heads to get some respect around here...

Now now, there are just as many Christian "extremists" as there are Muslim"extremists" (please note the sarcasm).

I think it's safe to say if it had been a Bible or any other religious doctrine, there would be no story.

See there's this thing called free speech here in America and it is this... not religion that separates us from them. Or maybe Iraq is a country full of PMSing women... they're very sensitive people.... the squeaky wheel gets the grease right?

We have got to repect other peoples religion even if we don't belive in it

I respect Islam. As Christians we share the same roots with that religion. That being said I do not respect extremists whose purpose is to kill or convert all who believe differently. I could care less about respecting their religion. I do realize that this will offend all Muslims but it is about time they learned to reel in the extremists who give them a bad name.

no doubt, and i'm tired of the dang "political correctness" a lot of politicians (mainly libs) have. they are successfully turning this country in to a big pansy. i'd use another word but i'd get banned

There are alot of Christian extremists out there as well... and Christians used to do some pretty monstrous things that make extremist Muslims look like a bunch of puppy dogs. I tend to frown on extremism of any kind except being a Tennessee fan :)

Maybe there is our answer. We can get some brave volunteers, no pun intended, from VN to go to the Middle East and convert them to Tennessee fans. One thing would be for sure, you wouldn't want to run into them after a loss. Might be dangerous to your health.

I don't think they did anything worse than what is being done by extremists today. That being said Christians are no longer doing those things. We could play the tit for tat game all day long but wrong is wrong and if you want to justify what is happening today by events 1,000 years old I'm sure we could go back even further and we would find events that led to the crusades.

To say Christian extremism doesn't exist today is nonsense. It's just in a different form. May not be as violent as the Muslim extremists, but it's there. Using the Bible as a reason to fight is dumb and I stand by my stance that most of the stuff in the Bible should not affect laws and society today. Unfortunately, people take a book too seriously (goes for the Quran, too).

Just curious, what form do you speak of?

Perhaps he's speaking to the Jim Jones in Guyana, or the weird white haired guy that had all his cult take poison too...or possibly David Koresh...or maybe the Mormons.

David Koresh didn't kill anybody... the BATF did.

The Inquisition lasted 400 years and they did a lot worse things than cut people's heads off with a dull blade or car bomb innocents. Point is, is that it was done in the name of Christ but I agree... that was a long time ago and some folks are still a hair behind the times.

The Crusades BTW, were started by Christians to free Jerusalem from Muslim rule.

maybe we should define extremism then.

The whole killing people via suicide attack qualifies as extremism to me. Telling homosexuals that they can't be married doesn't quite cut the mustard for me.

It started as a reaction to Muslim encroachment into Europe as well as to free Jerusalem. You are trying to split hairs if you claim that Crusaders did worse than the radicals of Islam. Burning, done by both, you can go on and on.

That's the only point I was out to make... no splitting hairs from me. All of which which makes me proud to be associated with neither group. Extremism in anything is not good IMO.... except of course in Tennessee Football :)
