I was looking for Vols in NFL thread thinking someone would have posted this by now. But Sunday JJ lost his mind in a wasted heroic effort. 12 targets 11 catches 175 yards and 3 TD's. He had some insane catches that game. The niners are ravaged with injuries to stars. Kittle was out and is questionable for this week. Deebo Samuel is out. Christian McCaffrey is on IR and in Germany looking for miracle treatment. Their rookie first-round WR Ricky Pearsall is out. And Brandon Aiyuk seems to have forgotten how to catch since he got his extension. they also lost probably their best Defensive player for the year. Purdy was hurt end of game and is day to day so a Dobbs sighting is not likely but very possible. It is still early in the season but the Niners could decide to see what they have in their backups with all the drama behind Deebos contract and Purdys durability issues since he is coming up on an extension also. One can only dream. Dobbs and JJ doing it big in Niners Jerseys would make me a very very happy man.

Byron Young also had a sack and 2 TFLS in that game. He is so far outperforming Jared Verse who starts on the opposite side of him.

Isn't Verse a rookie?

Yup but he was the big-name Edge in this years draft(first round pick) . Byron is a 2nd year player (3rd round pick) all he did last year in his rookie year was tie Aaron Donald for second on the team for sacks (8). The leader Kobie Turner (9) his 3 round draftmate who took Donalds' place this year after his retirement. The point is those 2 guys are great values not that Verse is a bust. The Rams front 7 is beastly even without Donald.

These contract hold outs negatively affect the teams. Just look at the Bengals and 49er's. I don't understand how a player who has 1 or 2 years left on the contract that they agreed to, can just demand a new contract. And they almost always win the hold out game--owners always cave.

Get used to it. Coming to your favorite college teams and players via NIL.

on one of the pregames or halftime shows, one of the commentators said JJ was the best #3 WR in the league
don't remember which one I had flipped to
GO VOLS
That goes without saying. he is continuing his coming out party from the postseason. Deebo and Kitles being out mean the Niners are gonna try more was to get JJ involved and the more they find out the more they are gonna love it. Imagine a Taysom Hill type that's a better receiver, better runner and better blocker. If he keeps up at this we will see him more in wild catish situations folks keep forgetting he was recruited as a QB out of HS. if that egg gets cracked things get spicy. I don't think he is a better WR or RB as Deebo at this point in his career but for the money he is close enough and offers more overall (blocker, can line up as QB). Can he stay healthy and keep showing out is the question.

Well, he is the best WR3, and it works great with the 49ers offensive system, which why he was rewarded with a new contract. His loyalty, plus an understanding of his own niche, is extremely valuable to a perennial professional organization like the 49ers

JJ just being JJ. Lesson to young players. Run good routes, catch every ball in your vicinity, get paid.
I remember the stories of JJ effectively taunting the "jugs machine". Repetition paying off.

The Niners are not really suffering from contract holdouts right now they signed Aiyuk. Samuels, Purdy and Kittles are problems for next year. Purdy, because he wasn't a 1st rounder does not have a 5th year option. Kittle also expires next year as well as Deebo. something has to give because they cant sign all 3 of them and oh BTW even though McCaffrey is signed through 2027 he becomes cap bait after 2025 also. So this particular set of circumstances has lined up very well for JJ and potentially Dobbs. (very distant possibility).

Look at it this way...Kittle does not really have a big injury history. McCaffrey not only has recent injury history and is in Germany shopping for experimental surgery (always a bad sign) but he is a RB about to be 30 after his 2025 season. Which in NFL terms= time to cut/trade him. Deebo and Purdy seem to always miss a few games each season (both have only played 16 games in a season in their careers) Deebo is also about to hit the big 30 at that time and though he's a WR so less of a big deal its a deal. The Niners have invested all their eggs in the Purdy basket so far. Outside of this season being a complete write-off and them getting a top 10 pick they are kinda stuck with him. Kittles also likely stays (he is pretty much a workhorse) but he is already 30 so ya never know. That leaves Deebo and McCafrey as the casualties. Both of them are longish in the tooth for their positions, injury prone, and expensive. On top of that, the Niners have serviceable replacements already on the roster for them. In the case of Deboo? JJ and Pearsall are waiting in the wings. At RB they have Jordan Mason and can easily find some guy in the second or third round to back him up.

As far as why players hold out? In most cases they bet on themselves and they know they have leverage. Much as Adopted said, get ready for it in college. The funny thing to some extent College players have even more leverage than NFL players because they are literally free agents 24/7. They have no binding contract to the TEAM. A college player can just peace out on his team any game of the season and transfer. Like the DE at NC state did this week. h elead their team in sacks last year was 2nd string this year played his 4 games and said toodles see ya in the portal.

and Bam right after i mentioned the player from NC State and even bigger one hit..

Hilariously right after I posted the first reply to this talking about the DE from NC State who bounced on his team this week.. new hit that UNLV's QB is bouncing on his team because they didn't pay him what he was promised. It was the kids fault in my opinion how do you agree to come play for 100k and not sign a contract first? They turned around and tried to just give him 3000 a month for 4 months instead of the 100k he was promised. Dude did it nice though didn't try to negotiate just said I'm gone ill hit the portal and now they are sitting a surprising undefeated team a lot were projecting to make the playoffs without their star QB.

from ESPN
The decisions come at a compelling moment for UNLV, as the Rebels are 3-0 and ranked No. 23 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, marking the first time the program has been ranked in any major poll in history.

His likely replacement a guy that came fro ma school in north Carolina whose mascot is fighting camels.
