It is some weird thing he and another guy are doing. He is in character all the time (in public) now.

Just bored hollywood types with too much money and time on their hands.

My favorite part was when Phoenix said that he would love to come back and perform on the show, and Dave said "No i dont think that is going to happen"....lol

The whole thing was strange....He is a great actor, but obviously something is up.

Its obviously staged seeing is they are filming this for a move. Casey is the director, he is trying to take the Borat/Andy Kauffman thing to a new level.

I'm guessing staged. You've heard about this more that the average Letterman interview, therefore it boost both Letterman and Phoenix's name.

People read, "J. Phoenix who is the lead actor in X AND X MOVIE was a little weird on David Letterman last night."

It's all advertising/ marketing/ public relations/ etc.

It's been proven that the length of ones beard is directly proportionate to awesomeness.

I've heard that he faked it. Supposedly he's currently filming a mockumentary about an actor that shifts his focus to music and fails. He has a camera crew following him around wherever he goes. It's being directed by Casey Affleck.

LOL if you think this would help Joaquin's career in any way.

Are we talking about him? Is there a thread on VN about him? And this is a sports centric website. When I opened my browser he has been on the opening page since it happened up until last night.

Are people aware of what he is doing now more than before he went on Letterman?

Edit: I need to qualify that last question with moreso than the average-run of the mill Letterman interview?

I'm thinking his behavior has been staged... but then again who really knows. I hope the guy isn't in as bad of shape as he is leading on. I don't want to see what happened to his brother happen to him.
