Believe you have mixed up the brothers....... It was Mike that was part of the Stop Start duo unless my aging memory has taken a turn for the worse.
The Vols had two Mike Cofers on the roster. Michael was known as “Stop” and the other, a tight end, was known as “Go.”

Joe was the younger brother of Michael "Stop" Cofer.

One morning in 1982, I was running on the track while Mike Cofer was running. He would sprint for half track and walk half track. He was tall, long and fast. It was another level. Serious dude.

This was certainly messy with James Cofer and Terry Minor. It caused upheaval for Clemson. James later had legal problems involving narcotics. Mike Cofer who played at UT and Detroit Lions was phenomenal.

Wow. Gotta be honest-

While I knew of Clemsons problems in the 80s, I was unaware of the Knoxville/UT connection. Was kind of just before I started getting interested in football.

Tigers being wounded for a while really fueled the late 80s and 90s run for UT.

Never ceases to amaze me how interconnected things are in life.
