So, I have been thinking about how good/bad this guy is as a manager and I was hoping to get some input. I read earlier today that Girardi was interested or at least liked the idea of his name being in talks of taking over in Chicago. Now the guy has not been managing for all that long and yes he managed a world series team last year, but is he really all that good? Let's say he was managing the pirates and not the yankees, what kind of managing score would he be receiving? I just find it really difficult to guage how good of a manager he is, because he is managing the yankees. The yankees are stout no matter who is their manager.

I think you could just about insert any mlb capable manager in his place and have a pretty good team every year. So how much effect does he have on their ability to win regularly? Is he really a top teir guy that should even get first consideration for the cubs or even the cardinals if larussa hypothetically retired. I don't think so, but that is just me. I hate the cubs and don't really have a soft spot for the cardinals, but i just find that it would be a much tougher job to manage the cubs than the yankees. I am just curios what you all think about his abilities and status as a manager, because I really am on the fence? I just feel that because he is managing a team that is always a contender that it might make him look better than he is.

He will not leave NY for Chicago.

I think time will tell for sure just how good of a manager he is. I think the way he bounced back last year is a big testament.

well sure, but how hard is it to really bounce back when you are leading the yankees? I think what is happening in san diego is far more of a testament to bouncing back than the yankees not reaching the postseason one year. world series seem to grow on trees in the bronx and come rather frequently, so that is my dilemma with trying to figure this guy out.

but, i agree what kind of a fool would leave the yankees to go to chicago?

Keeping the Marlins in the hunt for the Wild Card in 2006 speaks pretty loudly as well.

I guess it's possible, but I just don't see Joe leaving for another team at this time.

He did a good job with the Marlins. Why did he get fired?

Joe butted heads with Marlins Upper Management over personnel issues as well as their involvement in the clubhouse.

Girardi let Loria and the rest of his minions know they were clueless morons.

I spoke with a guy today that I respect very highly and he said Joe has always had the desire to one day manage the Cubs because of the opportunity to "go home."

He did say though that he didn't expect it to happen anytime soon.

As I've said earlier in another thread, the Cubs are going to target some big names for interviews, but at the end of the day it will be Ryno's job.

when i first heard lou was out at the end of the yearm y first thoughts were that sandberg was the replacement. that guy i believe will be a very good manager. he has done well in the minors. i don't think girardi takes the job, but i still am not sure if he has just been lucky to have the yankees job fall into his lap. to me the cubs job sounds good to any guy looking for a job, but they have a long road uphill to fix that club. so it might not be the most desirable place to be for the next few years.

As was said, Girardi did a great job with the Marlins, which set him up for the Yankees job so you do have a larger sample size than just with the biggest payroll in baseball.

A lot of people hate the way he manages the bullpen but the Yankees don't exactly have a great one, so "micromanaging" it is just one way to try to cover up for their weaknesses.

Other than that, there aren't a great deal of challenges of managing the Yanks when you've got the weapons he has. He hasn't made many real glaring errors that I can think of and it seems like he has figured out the clubhouse and the media, which is what really plagued him in his first year with the big boys.

No way that team should have been in the hunt as long as they were.

They weren't that bad of a team, they had a really young staff. Give you that.

They also finished 10 games out of the wild card, no matter how long they stayed in the race, they finished 10 games out.

It was closer than 10 games for a while.

That team had no business being that close.
