John Adams: Top teams not only barometer for judging Lady Vols

This quote nicely sums up the problems with trying to gauge how this team is playing:

"Tennessee was good enough to beat then-No. 7 Oregon State on the road and bad enough to lose to Arkansas on the road. Given that range in performances, you shouldn't be shocked if it upsets Notre Dame. Or loses at home against Vanderbilt on Thursday."

I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see this scenario play out. If Russell can't score on Turner and defend her, then I don't know what to say.

If I wanted to read John Adams, I would buy the KNS.

I stopped buying it, BECAUSE of John Adams.

I come here, because most are smart enough NOT to post John Adams moronic writings.

Thanks a lot for just putting it in a link. And NO, I will NOT click on it.

I don't like John Adams, but I agree that he was spot on. He summed up 50 rambling threads here in one concise article.

FINALLY the local media is starting to call out Holly. Adams calls it like it is and doesn't pump sunshine and rainbows, I can see why so many dislike him...

I disagree with two things. One, Warlick's never proved herself a capable coach as she's fallen short anytime she's faced decent competition. And, two, the competition in women's basketball isn't markedly better than it was 20 years ago. It's still the same small collection of teams that can win and do. So, it's entirely appropriate to judge her on the "glory days" since that means we have a standard here at Tennessee which can, and should, be met as one of, if not the, standard bearers of the sport. Nothing chaps my ass more than hearing someone say that the expectations should be lowered. Drives me crazy.

I've argued for years the SEC isn't what is used to be (and performance in March has proven that), and Holly has benefited from dominating a watered-down league during her tenure as coach giving her a deceptively impressive looking resume with win percentage and league titles. I don't think that will be the case anymore...

Exactly. If women's basketball were gaining in depth of talent, then there wouldn't be one team winning every year at a 98% rate, or whatever it is.

And he will probably only do it once unlike the repetition fest here.

So do you want us to discuss something that isn't happening? Like a fairy tale Warlick who wins all her games and leads her team to championships? Or, just not post at all? Like if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all? Works for Holly.

No, that is not what I am saying. Can't people can discuss the current state without bashing or saying the same ole thing over and over again?

if you dislike all the moaning & bashing in the threads here, don't read here, Ricky.

I will read here and I will post here just like all of you but I will hold to my beliefs just like you hold to yours. I expect no less from others.

Adams stirs S--t. This week, he will criticize her. Then, he will suck up to her next week, and scold fans for being mad at her. He is a hypocrite, and those who don't get that are sheep.

The current state of the program, less making personal comments about the coach and players, is bad and headed in the wrong direction. How do you soft soap this fact? We have had more bad than good displays of basketball? That is fact not fiction. Unfortunately, when bad things, like good things, happen you will get redundancy. A lot of that happens, in this case, because of frustration with how the LV's play the game and the inconsistent coaching.

No more calls...we have a winner. South Carolina looked far from elite today against A&M. Given their play to date I would be surprised to see them at the Final Four. Only SC, UK, Mississippi State, and A&M look like locks for the NCAA Tournament. Are several more likely? Sure. But the remaining teams are a giant hot mess.

Another issue: Diamond DeShields' is the team's best player and it's most creative offensive player. However, she also can create turnovers at an alarming rate. She's committed 20 in the last three games and 55 in 16 games this season.

Her greatest skills suggest you should build your offense around her. The turnovers say: "Do so at your own risk."

This is the disturbing part of the article. DD is both a blessing and a curse. Which aspect will win? Will the "curse" aspect negatively affect recruiting?

It's not just DD that is playing below her ability, the entire team is playing well beneath their talent level. When DD played for UNC she made freshmen mistakes, but her overall play was far better than it is now. I also watched Mercedes play this summer for team USA and she looked very impressive, possibly the best player on the team. Amazingly, she returns back to Rocky Top and her play suddenly turns into the mess we're currently seeing. The only common denominator between the two players is the coaching staff.
