I always heard on here that he wasn't a good recruiter before he went to LSU. Yesterday he was announced as one of the top 25 recruiters by Rivals. Is this something that he just now started to do at a high level or has he always recruited well and the opinion about him was wrong?

Chavis doesn't recruit high numbers of players. But he's very good at getting the ones he selects and goes after. Chavis has a GREAT name Out side of some of our idiot fans. Very well respected coach nation wide.

Chavis is a good coach. Young players know/recognize the name and that is a plus. He's now in a talent-rich area and all this feeds into less personal interaction.

Phil didn't force the issue and make him recruit here. His new boss doesn't let him away with it.

I don't pay attention to coach speak, it's a waste of my time. I've watched probably 80% of the games he's called over the last decade, and Chavis is the epitome of "meh."

It can be argued that LSU is the cushiest recruiting job in the country. There is a point at which talent can mask average play-calling, and LSU's defense is usually past that point year in and year out.

His defenses are year after year in the Top 10 overall. I get people being mad about third and Chavis, but people forget that our anemic offenses under Randy Sanders and Fulmer never protected a lead after Tee left. For as many blunders as his defenses had late in games, those offenses had 2 more 3 and outs.

LSU is the only show in town in one of the most talent-rich states in the country and has the closest thing you can get to ready-made NFL defensive talent beating down the door every single year to come play. Any average defensive coach can turn that level of talent into a good defense, and Chavis is an average coach.

That's why LSU's defense sucked the year before he got there and became the top defense in the SEC his first year.

Every coach, from high school to the NFL has a prevent package. Fans always remember when it fails but never remember that the overwhelming amount of time it works. There's a reason that every coach uses prevent.

LSU sucked for a long time. Its amazing ...Mike Archer, Gerry Dinardo and all the other crappy coaches LSU had before Saban
It was all basketball and Dale Brown for too long.

Did you happen to watch their defense play the year before he got there? He made a huge difference.

I love the chavis apologists. The guy doesn't recruit. LSU is the easiest place to recruit to in the country. They hand select from their talent rich state then select a few from other states.

And Chavis' D can win in the SEC. But he is bad in 2 areas. Adjusting & 3rd downs. He's not some brilliant defensive mind. He has good D when he has beasts on D. If he has the horses, he's going to beat you. If he runs into a good offensive minded coach who has equal talent, he's in trouble.

Haha this attitude amongst Vol fans cracks me up. ONLY some Vol fans think like you. The rest of the world totally disagrees with you. From coaches, media and other fans.

Chavis hated and hates recruiting. He just wants to coach. The players that come in love playing for him and he builds bonds quickly, but he doesn't and never has been one to hit the road and beg a kid to come to campus. Anybody stating anything different is just wrong. Simple as that.

No one said he likes recruiting. But when he selects "his" guys he usually gets them. He doesn't recruit a high # of players but his success rate is very high.

The fact that he's never even been seriously approached to coach at a BCS program says he's right.
