LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis has won the annual Broyles Award given to the top college assistant coach.

Chavis is in his third year for the top-ranked Tigers, who will play Alabama for the national championship next month.

Chavis is the 16th winner of the award named in honor of former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles, whose assistant coaches went on to become notable head coaches at the college or professional level. They include Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Gibbs and Jackie Sherrill.

The 55-year-old Chavis guided an LSU defense that was second in the country in both scoring and total defense. The Tigers (13-0) allowed 10.5 points and 252.1 yards per game while finishing the regular season undefeated and winning the Southeastern Conference championship over Georgia.

Very proud for him! I heard a former player of his say that if the were in a bunker fighting for the lives of their children they wanted him fighting beside them. That's tells me all I need to know about that man!

Nice.

I'll also remind people that LSU fans were ready to run him out of town during his first year at LSU.

Yeah. I was borderline into that.

He has done a very good job, 2009 kind of sucked because not everyone was use to his system, gave up a lot of yards at times. Things started clicking last year.

A good buddy of mine lives in Colorado and goes to every LSU game, even away. They go in full outfit. Purple and gold head to toe. I can't dislike LSU.

A good portion of my family now lives in Vols country so I root for the Vols except when they play LSU.

To be honest, its sometimes hard for me to get along with LSU fans as I don't drink all the koolaid but I am sure I have a drop from every once in a while.

Why isn't his name linked to any head coaching jobs?

Has always been labeled as a guy that wasn't really good on the administration side of coaching. Loves being on the field and not much else. Don't know if that's fair. He is an all-time favorite of mine, but I wouldn't hire him because of that rep.
