John Pelphrey to Arkansas

I know some Kentucky fans were wanting him. I don't think he's ready to coach in a strong league like the SEC, but Arkasnas does. I guess we'll see.

yeah he was an assitant under donovan for a while...he did alright at south alabama...but from south alabama to the SEC is a pretty big step...we'll see what he does....

He may turn out all right, but I don't know that I would hire him. Like you said from South Alabama to the SEC is a big step.

I never dreamed Arkansas could fire Stan Heath and end up with a more incompetent, overmatched coach. That'll teach me to underestimate the idiocy of Frank Broyles.

i think they were very desperate...they needed to find a coach fast, especially with recruiting nowadays....

And I remember alot of people saying Bruce wasn't ready for the SEC and that turned out pretty good. Should be interesting.

Yeah, hiring Pelphrey will really help their recruiting. There's a difference between desperate and dumb. This hire falls squarely in the latter category.

You have to remember the guy is 82 years old. With that said, I'm not sure he(John P) can do much worse than Stan did. In fact, I'm willing to bet they'll finish second in the west as long as Beverley and Weems return. I can at least vouch that he'll get more out of his players than Stan ever will. But I'm more interested to see how his recruiting goes this summer.

I read somewhere that Broyles is the "outgoing AD." Is he about to retire? It's a shame, from Arkansas' point of view, that they had to entrust the basketball coach's hiring to someone who will not be around to be held accountable for his hiring, should it not work out.

Pitino's influence is now felt by at least 1/3 of the league. Obviously, he had a lot to do with the success of Donovan and Pelphrey. I also think his style of play was influential in Pearl and Gillispie getting hired. I know that Pearl's mentor was Davis, not Pitino, but I think Mike Hamilton may have been looking for that style of play for a reason.

Finally, I think the opening at UK indirectly led to Pelphrey getting the call. With UK looking and Florida potentially looking (had Donovan decided to leave), Pelphrey, seriously or not, was rumored for both jobs. There was certainly talk in KY about when Pelphrey or Travis Ford would be ready for the UK job. One columnist suggested they would be ready the next time the UK job comes open. Basically, Pelphrey's name was hot this week, and Arkansas bit on him. He's certainly better off in the West right now than the East. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I think Pelphrey had an opportunity to be a good head man one day, it is just way too early for the pressure he will experience at Arkansas.

I think they felt like they had to pull the trigger before signing day, and made the only hire they felt they could get. The Nolan Richardson situation such as it is really but them in a bind.

Between this and the situation with their football program, surely Broyles will eventually feel some heat from the fanbase.

Gillispie's style of play is as similar to Pitino's as a gorilla is to a grenade.

Pitino doesn't even play Pitino ball that was on display in 1996. People fail to realize the level of athleticism involved in applying that kind of defensive pressure.

He is retiring in July if I am not mistaken. Don't think the heat can get too hot from there.

I'll take your word on it. Perhaps I have too many wishful UK fans in my ear. I do still identify any fullcourt press with Pitino.
