kareem by the way freely admits that he wouldnt' have gone to UCLA if he didnt' get that money. says he couldn't have afforded it otherwise. and since he dominated the UCLA varsity team as a true freshman i think we can safetly assume he might have been sucessful elsewhere.

please. Learning to tie his shoes was a big deal to young Lewis.

Wonder if anyone bought Walton any weed?

Do you know when Gilbert specifically got involved? I've looked briefly for info but haven't really seen much. It's strange because it's like a well-known fact that you can only find discussed on message boards. (Although I really haven't looked long.)

However, I can be almost certain about his cheating just looking at his records. Not too often a coach consistently losing 10 games a year all of a sudden turns into some sort of demigod.

But facts are facts. And the fact is, Wooden was at UCLA for 15 years, from 1948-63, without winning an NCAA championship. And then from 1964-76 he won 10 titles in 12 years. What changed? Sam Gilbert's involvement changed.

Gilbert, a UCLA alum and wealthy contractor, opened his home and apparently his wallet to the Bruins, from Lew Alcindor to Lucius Allen to Bill Walton. When the best Bruins left school, Gilbert represented them as an agent, which is one of the most brazen unpunished NCAA violations in college sports history: Rich booster spoils the best players on campus, then becomes their agent. And the coach doesn't stop it. Doesn't even know about it.

Maybe Wooden didn't know. But his attention to detail was legendary. Wooden literally monitored how his players tied their shoes and how they wore their socks ... but he didn't know Gilbert -- the players called him "Papa Sam" -- was giving them cash and clothes and cars before becoming their agent? Maybe. More likely, Wooden didn't want to know. That's how he slept at night, and that's how he won 10 national titles

now i realize some of this stuff was done fairly commonly in those days, but not by a coach who talks about how friggin pure and moral he is all the time. and a coach who is commonly praised for doing things "the right way."

I don't think cheating is AS bad now a days... Even if Reggie Bush got a house, and if Carroll cheated, it's not like he tied his players to the mob.

scrutiny has changed the scope of the cheating for certain.

it was way too open for him not to know about it. he knew alcindor had no money before he came to ucla. where did he think the cars came from?

the funny part is the ucla fans who want blood for pete carroll doing things that are far less against NCAA rules.

i don't have serious issues with wodden's cheating by itself. to some extent every major program did this. the problem i have is people elevating him to sainthood. and a good % of the holier than thou crap has come from wodden himself. pyramid of success my arse.

I'd still rather it be some booster than a well known mobster... That just seems like a ridiculous thing to let your players be involved with.

So is Wooden the biggest cheater in sports history? Or at least close?

That's certainly a fair statement. It goes to show you what success can cover up. Especially the good ole' days.

P.S For ALL: Yes, I know it happened at UK, no need to start a useless, different argument.

Pretty amazed about some of the hate on this thread.

Many other people to hate besides wooden. Doesn't surprise me that a Kentucky fan wanted to pile on.

Right. I refrained from saying what I truly felt, while several vol fans stated the obvious and then I agreed with it.

Grow some thick skin and get over it.
