John Wooden dies at 99

Wooden looked the other way while Sam Gilbert bought the best players in the nation. Gilbert bought so many great players that UCLA's first two teams could win the national championship virtually ever year.

We as a nation are a disgrace. We love to just trash people and criticize those who have accomplished more than us.

He said he had a clear conscience. There was a shady guy in his program, that doesn't mean he was a bad guy who was full of ****.

People are so quick to judge and demonized its pretty sad.

I can enjoy college sports and enjoy them for now. Have for quite some time. When people are outed as cheaters or just low life scum, that's on them. There's going to be some bending of the rules because the NCAA is just ridiculous. Wooden and some others have far surpassed bending the rules. I did give up NFL 20 years ago because of the idiocy. Hope I don't have to give up college, but there may come a day.

They can all E.A.D. for all I care.

Pretty sad to pull up a thread to bash the guy. He wasn't handing out cash, he wasn't friends w Gilbert, he probably knew. He probably didn't want it to happen, but it did.

The hate is just indicative of how pathetic most people on our society are. He still contributed a million times more to society and humanity than anybody on this board.

The best amateur player in college basketball is given the Wooden Award every year. Wooden during his 10 year run had essentially professionals on his squad.

Gonna bounce this is thread will just bug me too much.

I get the tainted legacy, but don't understand the hate and act like he was in on it.

Didn't say that, he prob did. Doesn't mean he condoned it or assisted.

If he knew and didn't do anything about it, then he was a snake.

I only added the "if" because I was entertaining your argument about him possibly not knowing, which is ridiculous.

Something I find interesting is how he accepted the job at UCLA. That's an interesting story. He was obviously a man of his word and I like that.

I think Wooden knew of Gilbert. He knew there were some violations being committed. But I honestly don't think Wooden knew the extent of it all. And actually, Gilbert didn't really go big till Wooden left if I'm not mistaken.
