A.J. Johnson: Young Tennessee Vols 'combat-ready'

I really hope he's right. It will hopefully be a good game.

Approximately half of the Tennessee football players traveling to Saturday’s game at fourth-ranked Oklahoma have never played a college game away from Neyland Stadium.

If A.J. Johnson is concerned about it though, he’s hiding it very well.

Johnson, a two-time All-SEC senior middle linebacker who has starred in several games away from the friendly orange confines of Tennessee’s riverside stadium, said he isn’t the least bit concerned about the Vols’ youth heading into one of college football’s most celebrated cathedrals — Oklahoma’s Memorial Stadium.

“We’re combat-ready, so I’m not worried about that,” Johnson said. “I know the young guys ain’t worried about flying and stuff like that. They’re gonna be focused throughout the week and do their jobs and get the film broken down to do what we need to do to perform.”

Butch took a roster in 2010 ranked by Rivals-----2006/#109, 2007/#90, 2008/#67, 2009/#60, 2010/#59 vs. OU's roster superior athletes 2006/#9, 2007/#14, 2008/#6, 2009/#13, 2010/#7----and almost completed the upset with a team that went 4-8.

This staff is confident facing Stoops and OU...with a much larger upgrade in talent even if it is young. Excited to see what this staff has put together for this game.

I know Coach Stoops is saying all the right things and everyone's talking about this is the Big 12's (now 10) chance to take a SEC team to the woodshed...but you know those Oklahoma kids saw the film on last years Vols team, especially that beat down given us by Bama, so it is very likely they think this may be a cake walk. So roll that OU helmet out there Sooners and lets see what AJ thinks about your headwear!:salute:

I just want to see the young men wearing orange to go out play hard and not get pushed around. I can handle a loss if I see that tomorrow night.

I'm an OU fan and I've been looking at this game from all angles. First of all, I have the utmost respect for your team and you have a TOP NOTCH coach. I believe you'll be winning the EAST as soon as next year. This game could have many surprises. This game, IMO, will have three major phases to watch for. OU likes to overwhelm their opponents in the first 15 minutes. Secondly, due to our depth, we'll try to wear out your offensive and defensive lines in the second half. Third is who wins the turnover/penalty battle. On paper it looks like a mismatch due to UT's inexperience mainly in the offensive line combined with it being a road game. Games aren't played on paper and upsets occur all the time. I've seen young talented teams all of sudden turn a corner and grow up. Sometimes it's a slow process and sometimes it's simply winning a big game. This is the most physical and talented OU team I've seen in several years but UT is young but has top talent so anything could happen. Their is much interest in this game due to the Stoops vs the SEC angle so expect the game to get chippy with lots of skirmishes and penalties. Good luck and may there be no major injuries.

I understood what he meant, and I'm glad they are supposedly there mentally.. but I gotta admit I don't like "war ready" and "combat ready" comments.. my initially reaction was to be pissed he said it.. but I quickly calmed down..

i know it's not a big deal, but seeing people on here squabbling about a game this week, while in the back of my mind I'm sitting here wondering how many rocket attacks or attempted fence breachings to expect for sept 11 week sorta puts things into perspective..

like it said, it's not big deal... but still.. I just don't like them...

Agree. Regardless how intense we are about our Vols, comparing war to football just rubs me wrong.

This team may not win the game but they will easily cover the spread making OU 1-8 against the spread in their last 9 games against SEC teams!

Two things. It's a _FOOTBALL_ forum; there are other forums for squabbling about non-football topics, bringing us to thing #2. You have to be looking for something to get irked about to make the leap that he's comparing football with war. It's a figure of speech.

I appreciate those serving, you included, but you're a bit out of line.
