TL;DR - Butch Jones makes a lot of money to do an extremely stressful job that most of us would fail miserably at.
The reason for the clarification has more to do with the buy out we paid to Cincy than where CBJ ranks on the salary list imo.
In reality CBJ is about middle of the pack, salary wise, in the SEC.

The reason for the clarification is because it was wrong. I am sure CBJ doesn't want people thinking he makes $1.8 million more than he does, especially during hard times. Not only that, but he just doesn't make that much.
(Tennessee) Assumed responsibility for a $1.4 million payment owed to Cincinnati, said it is treating the payment as a reimbursable employee business expense and does not consider it compensation. However, Tennessee also said that if the payment becomes taxed as Jones income, the university will neutralize the actual tax impact on Jones.
TL;DR - Butch Jones makes a lot of money to do an extremely stressful job that most of us would fail miserably at. The head football coach of a major, historically top-tier SEC football program is arguably under as much if not more pressure to perform than the CEO of a major corporation is, yet we pay him 1/10 of what the CEO makes. We got a good deal IMO.
Hell, get us a bowl game this season and a Top 5 recruiting class this winter and they can pay him whatever they want. The future is bright. Go Vols.
