"I gave up a lot to come here." - Butch Jones
You are also getting a lot. $2.95 million in base salary.
Not putting the rest of what he said in there makes that comment sound worse than it really is, especially since it came after him saying "This place is special," and "You can put this in writing we're going to get it done."
He says it at the 4:35 mark in the interview. Interpret it how you will. But he didn't give up anything to come to Tennessee. He is getting a lot. Because "this place is so special".
Full context:
"But I know exactly where we are at in our football program and what we need to do to move forward and get better.
And I will tell you this, and you can write this:
We will get it done. This place is too special.
You know the only variable we have is time. And somebody said, why the heck are you doing that?
Because I believe in it. I believe in Tennessee Football, I believe in our fan base, I gave up a lot to come here because I want to be part of building something special and having that responsibility of getting Tennessee Football back. And I love Tennessee."
I don't know about you, but how can you not like this guy?
He was willing to give it up to go to Purdue and Colorado, too. He was flying all over the country interviewing for jobs, holding off one offer while he tried to field a better one. We happened to be the biggest fish, so here he is. I like Butch and I believe he sincerely likes UT, but c'mon, man. He's spinning it like he "gave up a lot" to get a better, more prestigious job and a big bump in salary-- not to mention, a huge buyout that makes him a multimillionaire with job security, win or lose.
