I suspect the grind of traveling to the mainland and the lack of any local recruiting base did him in.

hawaii regurally produces NFL caliber olineman and dlineman. Cal for instance strongly recruits the islands.

A report on FSR yesterday was talking about the dramatic transformation in attitude at SMU over the past few months. Basically, they were saying that the alumni and boosters had seen the success of Boise St and Hawaii and done a flip-flop on their stance on collegiate athletics. Rather than live in fear of the death penalty and kowtow to the faction that saw athletics as a detraction from the university as a whole, they had determined to try and build the "Boise St." of Conference USA.

There is a lot of tradition, good and bad, and a great recruiting base at that school, so it was probably only a matter of time before they tried to make a move. They were reporting that Jones was going to be offered a package of about $1.7 million at that time.

the cost of living matters a lot less when you are making 1.7 mil a year. apparently hawaii had a 50K recruiting budget. my guess is if the administration boosted spending on assistants, faciltiies, and recruiting budgets he would have stayed.

Why in the world did Hawaii ever let it get to this?

I question their AD's decision making, there is no way that Jones should have went to the end of the season without a new contract. Foolish.

Thoughts on this? I personally hope he does well there. I wrote a paper in high school on how the death penalty tore this university apart. Maybe they will become the pony express again through the air.

I cant believe SMU has that kind of loot to throw around.
I cant believe Duke has that kind of loot to throw around for football. Its the trend lately. All the little ones are finding the support to bring in big coaches, probably because they can show how much money it can generate for a school.

The facilities available to June Jones at Hawaii would be substandard for a 1A high school in E. TN. It was mentioned earlier, but if he'd gotten some commitment from the UoH administration and boosters to improve the facilities and increase the recruiting budget, Jones would have stayed.

The UH administration sucks royally, from academics to athletics especially. Once UH starts bleeding money, they may see the error of their ways. Maybe.

SMU is an expensive school whose business school is well respected.

You should have seen the local news out here last night. There were people protesting in the streets about UH letting Jones go. The AD is getting fired this week. The President of the university was on apologizing to the fans. It made me feel alot better about our situation.
