Jones vows to return toughness to Tennessee

"Full-padded practice, live practices and we're going to be a tough football team,” Jones said of the plan for this week as the Vols begin preparation for No. 7 Auburn. “I know this: those individuals understand that they didn't perform well and I think you've got to give your opponent credit as well.”

Kinda surprised it took a complete butt whooping in Mizzou to decide to get back in pads. You play like you practice.

4 viable QB's and 3 are hurt, banged up Randolph among others, I can see going a little easier in practice, especially on the areas we have the least depth.

From what I've been reading about Auburn (I haven't seen them play at all this year) Our Defensive front 7 is actually where this game will be won or lost. But you are right about the O-line too.:peace2:

For sure. The defense better sack up or else Tre Mason is going to have a career day.

Butch get's it, he was forced to watch Missouri manhandle our offensive and defensive lines with ease.

Does the team lack toughness? Or is it getting tired?

Get real! We don't want to teach toughness. Instead of teaching hard work, dedication, and sweat is what it takes to win win in life, maybe we should blame it on something that happened in their childhood! That's it, maybe yoga sessions or intense counseling will make them tougher! We can't do practice with pads, somebody could get hurt!

The O-Line in particular needs to man up this week...and stop those freaking drive killing penalties.

If O line plays the same in the first half as they did against Mizzou put in Crowder, Marcus Jackson and Weisman. These guys all play to the Whistle. James Stone was 3 yds back into Dobbs the whole game. Man up line! and trust me I Hope they do. And in before some dumb a$$ (you know who you are) says, "say it to their face." Someone get me a coaches jersey and into a practice and I'll do just that.

BINGO!!!! Finally I hear something coming from CBJ that needs to be changed. All this crap over and over about, we're too slow, our 4 star linemen with all kinds of experience all suck, next year it'll be different because all 30 of the 2014 class will be superstars. It all starts with toughness and being physical, the big uglies up front. Most important is the attitude from the staff, preach it everyday, play it on the field, Tennessee has been pushed around on the line for over a decade both sides of the ball and thats the number one problem. If you can run the ball no matter what the defense is doing, you can throw the ball better, your defense gets more rest. If you stop the run on D with linemen, your lbs can help in coverage, if we get a pass rush for ONCE it helps the dbs. It starts up front, period and Im not sold that we have enough linemen in this 2014 class. Run the damn ball and stop the run!!!! It starts with an attitude and the staff preaching it over and over. I hate Kiffin as much as the next but he preached it. I still remember four straight runs into the middle of the line late against UCLA and we all thought how the hell can you do that, but its saying if we cant man up and blow them off the ball we lose and lord knows we've done our share of losing the last 6 years!!!

I agree with alot of what you saw here. Couple of things to consider :

- defenses key our run and flood our gaps at the point of attack. WE have not had a consistent intermediate passing attack all season ...we have had moments but not consistent. This is the only thing we can do to unplug the gaps . 5 guys cant block 7 or 8 guys at the point of attack

- the defensive front has no depth and no real rotation. They have about 1-2 quarters of decent football and then the bottom falls out. There is a huge fall off with the freshmen and squad level subs. Like you said ..when the front fold ...there is no pass rush and the young secondary gets carved . The depth issue is not a coach issue , or a motivational issue...it is a standard 3 deep issue that we just dont have.
-
The whole full pads , full contact issue is tough . Do you go for broke and risk pivotal injuries in practice that that will handicap your team ? This is an age old question that I recall numerous coaches wrestling with . It is all back to the depth issue .

Also ainge this morning quoted our teams 40x... Next year our linebackers will be faster than our secondary. Crazy...

Thats great insight and confirms what alot of us know from the 'eyball' test . I have not lost hope on the secondary . They are operating with no pass rush and are being asked to hold coverage for an inordinate amount of time. They are very young for the most part.

While they may have some speed issues ..they may be able to overcome that if the D can reduce the coverage time to 3 seconds. Any secondary would look bad at 6-7 seconds.

According to Jawuan they had a players only meeting and went to coach Jones and requested that they go back to full pads this week. The players felt they were getting away from that championship mentality. These players have not quit, they want to get better.

I agree with the players decision. I understand what Jones is doing ...with no depth and a ton of reps for individuals, full pads practice could , with bad luck decimate our thin roster .

With 3 games left and a much needed bowl in the balance ...it is time to go for broke

I pray that Tennessee FINDS that toughness before the Auburn game and not after the KY game!!!

It's always been a little surprising to me (especially considering our big WR's) that we don't dial up slants more often.

Read somewhere or heard that Worley was not very good at throwing slants . A slant is a route that can end in an INT . Maybe Dobbs is better at it

Our very serious lack of depth and keeping our kids totally worn down is the reason bUTch has slowed down on the full pads, full contact practices alot.

Playing a top 10 team almost every week really does tire out even the kids in the best shape and over a season like this it just wears them down with no serious rotational depth.

Here's an example...How can bUTch and the other coaches seriously try to Win a game when a DT gets really tired and needs a break but all the coaches know that the next guy in line on the roatation is really not ready and that will seriously weaken our D line?

Damned if you do and damned if you don't so it's a no win situation no matter what our coaches do.

Same thing with full pads and full contact practices with such a serious depth issue and if a starter gets hurt in a full contact practice then our team is weaker and less prepared on gameday.

This next recruiting class will help some but we also lose alot of starters after this season so realistically it's going to take several years of top recruiting classes to build us back up to a Championship team again.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

Dobbs proved he can throw a HECK of a deep post route. Just need to get someone in there that can catch it!

Im not sure if this was mentioned earlier, but Butch was calling the O-line the "90 club" because they only rushed for 90 yards against Mizzou. Thought that was pretty funny.
