Talk about it in The General's Quarters

Sugar Land (TX) Kempner is home to perhaps one of the top sleeper running backs in the entire nation for the class of 2010. The Cougars run an option offense, so it is hard for one back to put up big numbers. Nevertheless, plenty of colleges have taken notice of Josh Bell.

Kempner junior running back Josh Bell could be close to a Texas A&M offerThe 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior ran for just over 600 yards in a season shortened by Hurricane Ike, but he also tallied over 20 receptions as well. Though a different offense might showcase his abilities more, Bell's name has made the rounds.

"I'm just getting letters right now," he said. "I haven't really talked to any coaches yet or anything. Oklahoma, Missouri and Tennessee have been showing a lot of interest."

However, according to Bell, it is an in-state school that seems closest to pulling the trigger on an offer.

"As far as schools in Texas, I've heard a lot from A&M, Tech, TCU and Baylor," he said. "I think that A&M may be close to offering. I'd be interested in them for sure, especially if they offer. I haven't ever been up there or anything, but I hear a lot of good things about the campus and the facilities and stuff."

Though it is still very early in the recruiting process, the talented junior does admit to having a favorite school already. It has actually his favorite since he was young.

"I've kind of always wanted to go to LSU," said Bell. "I've gotten a few things from them, just saying they've been watching me and everything. I've lived in Houston my whole life, but I've just liked them since I was little. I like the way they run their offense and how it operates and stuff. I like Oklahoma and Nebraska, too.

"I don't know that the future holds, though. My mom and dad are going to be a major, major influence on where I end up. It's really too early to have any clue where I'll end up. I'm just open to everybody right now. I still have another year before I have to really make any of those decisions."

With few colleges running the option these days, Bell says it won't be tough to make the transition to another system. In fact, he says he is actually more comfortable in a different system.

"We run what we call a 'zig option.' They have me lined up behind the tackle, sort of like a wingback," he said. "We pass it a lot more than most option teams, though, so I line up in the slot a lot too. I think I have pretty good hands going over the middle or coming out of the backfield.

"I'm actually really comfortable in the 'I', but they changed that up after my freshman year. We had a new coach and we started running the option. That's what I'm most comfortable in, running between the tackles. I don't do that all that much in our scheme now, but it won't be a tough transition to college since that's where I think I do best."

Kempner's season came to an early end last weekend with a first round playoff loss to Clear Lake. Bell is now preparing for track season where he runs the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
