Josh Heupel and Integrity

I hate to go there, but this wasn’t about integrity.

Tennessee acted in its own self interest.

Why this was such a dumb move by Nico is that Tennessee really had no choice and I don’t think he ends up with the money Tennessee was giving him

And if I am going to be brutally honest, he’s not even that good
You are 100% spot on, this was in our self-interest. It feel like it was an opportunity to get out of a no-win situation. We had a QB that year 1 couldn’t beat out Joe Milton and year 2 had average stats and was grossly overpaid. If we are paying Nico type of money we should be enjoying the rewards not swimming in average. And no, he is not why we went to the playoffs, it was in spite of his play. When coach has to change his game plan to accommodate one player, there are bigger issues at play.

This isn’t an integrity thing. Not by Heupel, not by Lanning, not by anyone who tells Nico thanks, but no thanks. It is all because Nico isn’t good. Some of us were a little earlier than others in admitting it, but it appears Nico was too dumb to realize it and played himself. If he were Hendon Hooker, he could have named his price, here or anywhere. But nobody wants to pay out the áss for a skinny Joe Milton who thinks he’s a fast Tom Brady.

I agree.

Also this season was going to be a rebuild that turned into a RELOAD. As the season progressed.

We’re very young in some spots with a ton of experience in others. Nico wasn’t happy and therefore would not have led Tennessee anywhere significant.
I agree, but actually he did not lead us last year. Our defense and running game led us.

Has potential but was a mediocre SEC qb. There are quite a few guys that are better making much less than him. He could have made the step next year and possibly got a pay raise or went pro. I really think in the grand scheme this decision will cost him financially

Nico has missed spring practice at wherever he is going. He very well have to sit out while learning. Heupel’s system is quite different.JMO
He will have all dinner to learn the new system and fall practice and weak early opponents to work on it. If he has an O-Line that can actually protect him, he'll do OK.

I agree, he has to have plenty of time to throw, if he does get the time, which is longer than a good qb needs, he will do ok.

I agree with most of your post but, how can you say "integrity" by CJH n DW wasn't part of the decision???

What I meant by that and I should clarify......this wasn't a choice between making an ethical decision that hurt the program but was the right decision and doing the unethical thing because the team would be better off.

The decision to let him go was both founded on proper principles and the best thing for the program, short term and long term. There really wasn't a choice here. They had to let him go.

He's a cancer.

Apparently CDL at Oregon gave coach Heup a heads up that Nico and his family were looking around. I doubt he ends up at Oregon.
Putting aside all the topics of NIL, Nico's accomplishment, Renegotiations..etc....Once Friday morning hit with his absence and the news about Coach Lanning calling Josh and informing him Nico was "shopping around for a deal" and the negative light Nico was putting on the university....NO OTHER CHOICE WAS APPROPRIATE BUT TO LET HIM WALK. The old adage "You made your bed...now you have to lie in it" rings true here for sure. Surely....Arkansas is watching this happen and questioning the future for Madden.

Josh Heupel is known for his commitment to his players' success and for emphasizing the importance of integrity, both on and off the field. Heupel's success at the University of Tennessee is not only on the field but also in the classroom, with his players achieving high academic progress and graduation success rates.

supported by all those pictures of players in class, solving problems, learning attentively. OK, we agree.

Heupel also places high value on his Christian principles, which sometimes require him to make tough choices, and today's decision to say no to the greedy Iamaleava family was the right thing to do. I am very proud of him right now.

Your resolution that it was CJH Christianity is highly suspect. I'm of the opinion , unless, again, you can put forward specific evidences ( to say the least, are compromisingly flawed) is that CJH has never been a man who has stated that he is primarily driven by any such Christian principles. Whatever they might allude to be.

If the 2025 season gets rocky due to the process of bringing along a new QB, I vow to remember today and not be among the voices who might question his job.

Take the vow, Sister.
