So Josh Heupel is proving himself elite in the most important way for a head coach: his win/loss record.

Lifetime as a head coach (which is how the world will remember him), he is 65-22, including three seasons at UCF and almost a full four at Tennessee. That's a .747 win rate. A smidge better than our last national title-winning head coach, Philip Fulmer (.745).

As the Vols' head coach (which is how we will remember him), his is thus far 37-14, a win rate of .725.

But, and this is key, if you set aside his first season as an anomaly, and imagine his long term expectation of success, check out years 2, 3 and 4: 30-8. That's a win rate of .789. Third best in the history of the Vols, after only the General (.829) and his WW II stand-in, John Barnhill (.857).

That's a lot to be excited about. .789 is the kind of record that gets you into the record books for a long time.

For comparison: Knute Rockne .881. Barry Switzer .837. Nick Saban .803. Bob Stoops .798. Bear Bryant .780. Bo Schembechler .775. Woody Hayes .759.

We got a good one. No doubt. Nay-sayers, just be quiet and don't try to get the man fired, please.

Go Vols!

I am glad Heupel is the Vols football coach. And all Vol fans should be too. But if he loses his next game all these nega Vol fans will be ready to fire him. Just like they have been on our redshirt freshman QB. Nico is improving you can see that. He is only going to get better. There is not a lot of freshman QBs that can come in the SEC and tear it up.

great stats but the SEC is harder now than when Fulmer was coach. If Heupel is close to the same win % as Fulmer he will have been a better coach because of the level of competition.

I agree.

SEC was tough in 90s. You had Tennessee. Florida was the juggernaut. LSU was good for a couple years. Arkansas and Mississippi state had few good years. Georgia was really good. Alabama was great early to mid 90s even into 99 when they won SEC. I think the main issue was Florida state having weak schedules allowing them to play every year for the championship it seemed. They were good though.
