Strengths: Josh is a rangy, athletic guard who can play three positions at the college level. He has good size at 6'5/190, and can guard a variety of players. His defense, for a freshman last year, was very good, and why he played every game last year. Josh is good off ball, using his wingspan and surprising strength to make players catch the ball farther out than they would like. Josh also has good quickness, and even though he gets caught on screens sometimes, he can make up for it with his quickness. Josh is very good on ball. He knows to get low and use his feet on defense, and not his hands. He can keep his man in front of him, and only averaged 1.8 fouls per game while playing sixteen minutes a game, which isn't bad for a freshman defender and the assignments he drew. He also isn't afraid to mix it up, and played against all conference players very well last year. Josh has a nice mid range jump shot and has a quick first step that can get to the rim.
Weaknesses: Josh just does not have a good offensive game. He shot 35.3% last year from the field and 24% from three. Overall, a slash line of 35.3/23.7/60.4 will not get it done in the SEC. Josh also turned the ball over too much, with a 26% turnover rate. Josh is a very good defender, but has to fight through screens better to complete his defensive game. While he has a first quick step, Josh is hesitant to take the ball to the rim and must improve finishing the paint. Learning a floater or simply getting stronger and being more aggressive would greatly help. Josh has to improve his three point shooting and make himself a threat from the perimeter. He also has a curiously low steals per game, only .5 per game. With his ability, that needs to increase.
Final Thoughts: Josh has a lot of potential, especially defensively. He is fearless on the defensive end and wasn't afraid to face good players. He has good athleticism and length, and his surprising strength let's him face bigger wing players. Again, his offensive game must improve in all facets, especially his shooting. Josh can become an absolute shut down defender, and can be very valuable off the bench, especially if he can improve his point guard play. Josh has a bright future, and if he's willing to work hard on his offensive game, can become a starter for UT in the future.
