The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Crawford never announced that he had received a scholarship offer from Tennessee. But he told GoVols247 before publicly revealing his decision that he had “been in contact with a few coaches on staff” there over the past week who had previously recruited him at Central Florida.
Baylor and Ole Miss were among the other contenders for Crawford, who’s ranked the No. 40 overall junior-college prospect and No. 3 juco offensive tackle in the 2021 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He also holds offers from more than 20 schools in all, including Baylor, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Kansas State, Maryland and Houston.
Crawford gave the Vols their 21st commitment for the 2021 class and became at least the third offensive lineman in their class. Three-star offensive linemen William Parker of Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School in Nashville, Tenn., and J’Marion Gooch of Gallatin (Tenn.) High School both signed with Tennessee in December during the Early Signing Period, along with two-way lineman Amari McNeill of Suwanee, Ga.
-CallahanCrawford, who played at Goddard (Kan.) High School before enrolling at Butler, where he redshirted in 2018 before playing as a redshirt freshman in 2019. Heupel and his staff at UCF extended an offer to him in April and has stayed in contact with him over the past several months. Their long-standing relationship with him quickly paid off after Heupel was hired on Jan. 27.
With former Tennessee offensive lineman Wanya Morris recently having entered the NCAA transfer portal and announcing that he was transferring to Oklahoma, Crawford will add some much-needed depth and experience to the Vols’ current group of offensive linemen. Two longtime starters on their offensive line, Trey Smith and Brandon Kennedy, also are leaving the program coming off the 2020 season.
Crawford chose not to sign in December in hopes of seeing whether he could continue to improve his stock during his season at Butler, which was postponed until the spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As recently as last month, he indicated that he was still planning to wait until sometime during or after his season to make his college decision.
