Picked up by Cubs on same day.

He has National League skillset.

I abhor the Cubs though

Asking out of curiosity, not trying to be a jerk... What do you mean by NL skillset?

Gotcha, that's more or less what I figured.

So, I guess the problem with the Mariners isn't horrible management, but that they're in the wrong league.

White Sox cruised to a World Series title losing only 1 post season game in 2005 playing small ball and great pitching. The immediately reverted back to the Frank Thomas-style American League ball and have fallen back to mediocrity.

I know the "Moneyball" model hates small ball preferring the Earl Weaver offense. But why would my White Sox switch after one season to the same system where they wallowed in mediocrity?

From looking at the stats the reason for that would be the aging/injuries of scott podsednik. He was the biggest factor in the small ball department in 2005 but age/injuries dictated that change in philosophy. The sac bunt totals are very close in the years after the WS.

That was Pods one year. He was rather mediocre before and worse after. The stars aligned for sure for him that season. Good point. but consider Jim Thome was picked up in trade the next season as the Sox parted with Rowand and young Gio Gongalez. Thome was a one-trick pony by that time in his career and the Sox already had Konerko and Dye who were better in that slugger role.

The real topic is what we think of DS angle to small ball and its ability to being successful in the SEC.

Candy is playing a similar style and obviously it's working but they are also swinging for a little power as well(30hrs). They have. 125sba compared to 99 for the vols.

Do we think DS's plan is play "small ball" 1-9 in the lineup or would he prefer to have 30plus HRS in the middle of the order?

That sounds like a stupid question but its possible he doesn't want that.
