The unfortunate part of these "one-and-doners" is that we get so little time to know them as Tennessee players when they come through. But that is and has been the state of college basketball for some time now.

the one-and-done thing is kind of a joke. They rarely provide a significant boost to a team, because they're freshmen and it takes
freshmen at least a half season to adjust to college basketball, typically, and by the time they've adjusted and are making a mark they're gone. Phillips is a classic example--didn't help us that much at all. They leave for the NBA--but most aren't ready for the NBA, so they play in the G league or sit on the bench, and it can be 2-4 years before even some of them really emerge as pro players--if they do so at all. I'd like to see a survey of all the one-and-doners from the last 10 years and what kind of NBA careers they had/have. Cal at Kentucky as been bringing in 3/4 of them almost every year for, what, close to 20 years and has one title. Haven't been in the Final Four since 2015. We probably got as much out of Springer and Johnson as any program could expect in one year. Had we had them for even 2 years...

I think The Deacon will move away from that model. Certainly did this past year. HHB comes to mind..

Can DK be considered a 1&Done?

Certainly a different version. The freshmen 1& Ds are still adjusting to college and life. The 1 & D transfers are mature and should have adjusted. You have a far better idea of what you’re getting with the transfer version. The freshman version is risky and possibly disruptive.

People complain if these guys leave after one year and then also complain when guys like JJJ stay 5 years. Lol I guess the moral to the story is people will complain about anything and everything.
Hand up, I’ve gotten frustrated at times lately. With the covid year and the relaxed rules pertaining to transfers, redshirts and medical redshirts it can feel like certain guys have been in college for a decade.

The landscape of college athletics has changed so much over the past 2-3 years that it’s created 2 extremes. On one hand guys are sticking around for 6 years, on the other hand, guys are playing for 3+ schools over their athletic career.

It’s good for the players to make some money and have the flexibility to go pro, transfer, etc. but as a fan I’ll admit I miss the days of guys coming in and staying for 3-4 years. You get to know the players and watch them develop and grow over their careers and recruiting was also much easier to follow. On the inverse, when you have a guy like JJJ who’s been a 5 year starter, for me atleast, it feels like he’s been here for an eternity.

In reality this is just the new normal for college sports, I’m sure I’ll get used to it at some point like you and many others already have.
