I heard this chant from the crowd tonight. It was a very good thing to hear. I remember the '09 Georgia game I was there and the crowd started cheering "Crompton! Crompton!" for the first time of his career.
Even if we lost I have to say we found a QB tonight. And that will pay dividends for the rest of the season. Let's take the fight to South Carolina now. IMO they should be terrified of what they saw in Neyland tonight.
Nice post fellow Chatt-towner. But I must take a little issue with the bolded part.
The problem that has nearly made this board unbearable in the past 6 weeks is the mindset that says "
We are looking for a QB". We watch a tiny window of a players ability on the relatively few plays called in a game through a narrow TV window.
Our coaching staff has been proven winners on the college football landscape. I'm not buying the "best staff in America" crap, but they know what they are doing. They've had personal interviews, HS recruiting, tons of film, many many hours of drills and plays from feet away in practice, game situations in most cases, film study together with players, personal Q&A etc etc.
To say "we found a QB tonight" plays into the faulty argument of some of the whiny "Backup QB is my favorite player on our bad team" types that post ad-nauseam here. The coaches found this out in the spring and fall camps and 6 days per week during the season in person.
Yes, Worley's been pretty bad, but he is doing about exactly like I thought he would. Start off slow and get better and better with live reps and experience. He played pretty darn good tonight and made a few really good plays. There was plenty of plays that need improvement. But, I believe as the season goes forth he'll even better and give us a chance to go bowling.
It's pretty well agreed upon that our ex-coach Boy Wonder made a tough and CORRECT decision to stick with Crompton even when he was playing terrible for the 2nd year in a row. Out of all his crap, I've got to hand it to Lane for turning dung into roses. He knew what he saw (from Crompton and the others!) and he knew it was a process that would take patience. Thankfully, he didn't listen to the hoards of knee-jerkers.
We need to have a little bit more trust in the coaches that are up close and personal with these kids daily. They are probably not very suprised at the QB play to this point.
Obviously it's moving in the right direction too. That's what I'm most happy about. Go Vols. Enjoyed the game tonight!
