I know when the qb for Maryville went out that really hurt their offense.
I know Smyrna has been playing since prior to the Memphis game without Mr. High School Defensive player Deon Meadows out with habd surgery.
So lets call that a wash.
I was not surprised to see a freshman runnng back do so well since Smyrna's runnng back Bryson was MVP back when he was a freshman when Smyrna won their first or econd state title.
I do think the refs took away Smyrna's chance to win when they called that last penalty one of many they called all night against the Bulldogs. Maryville seemed offsides to me the play prior to that.
After all is said and done I think Quarrels (sp) is a better coach than Williams. I do think if former SHS 2 time state champ coach Shadowens was the coach last night he would have won. He did take a team to Maryville years ago and won on their homefield.
All this said, I think last nights winner was and should have been Maryville High School. Even though we were missing Meadows on defense Maryvilles qb is TUFF.
Congrats again to two powerhouse teams.Smyrna has one guy on their team (UT's John Henderson's half brother) has about 50 offers and Bryson has already signed with Pittsburgh. Maryville's punter Colquit (sp) is good I just wish we would have fielded some of those balls in the air.
By the way, I don't hate Maryville, I have two sons that graduated from Maryville College but we are all SHS grads.

the officiating all night could be considered questionable. all those neutral zone infractions on both squads was ridiculous at start of the game. however you say that smyrna had a bad call at the end of the game, well the ref took that pass td away on an offensive pass interference call against the rebs in the first half that was bogus . so no, the refs didnt take away smyrnas chance to win. the OL for smyrna was doing that all night.

I was surprised to see smyrna not go for it on that last play since they had pushed the defense back on the drive. That was a coaching call and i think the players on the field knew it.

Maryville has fielded better defense in past years and it showed in the game. but they got that safety which ultimately decided the game.

I am a maryille fan but i do realize that maryville's real competition lies in the middle and west tn teams. smyrna played a great game but Maryville had too much talent and spread the field on smyrna making plays in the air and on the ground. Not to mention superior special teams play.

see you next year smyrna??

The big news would be with all the advantages that mary and alcoa have that they dont win a championship.

If smyrna doesn't throw the interception toward end of first half, the probably win. Prevo from maryville could be a highly sought after stud in 3 years.

Congrats. Greeneville was very impressive when I saw them throttle Jefferson County earlier this season.

Quick somebody call 911, we need a WAHHHHHBULANCE!

I think you will see that open enrollment will become a major issue in the next few years. Hopefully TSSAA will find the nads to do something about it.

I doubt it. TSSAA has looked over it for so many years now and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Alcoa has had open enrollment for aprox 64 years and its never been a problem. It wont be one any time soon either. Just a bunch of haters and whiners gonna complain because they cant put out the talent that Alcoa does! :eek:lol:

No one really cared about Maryville or Alcoa's open enrollment in the 1990s. Wonder why?
