Slash and Burn Recruiting , see: Nick Saban
The kids are not signed ...they are committed .
A team can have 100 committments . There is no limit.
But will only sign 27 , in this case .
Maybe CDD and crew are going to these kids they really want ( Ambles , Stone , ect ) and saying ' you better act fast , we only have 3 spots left ' It is one of the oldest sales techniques ' building a sense of urgency '
CDD is building a pool of recruits. On signing day that will sign from the top of their board down to the bottom . They will take the best players they can . When they fill up their 27 spots ...the guys left outside of that 27 are left to go somewhere else.
So if Green , Ambles, Stone and ten other highly rated kids decide they will go to UT ...they guys on the board below them will be pushed down ...and the bottom of the board will not get a chance to go to UT.
I wouldn't worry to much about the guys that are viewed as second tier . If we finish strong , they will never make it . If not ...they are most likely better than walk-ons. Also 0-2 star players are plentiful . If they are picking specific guys ...they see a use for them. That 205 lb safety could become a 220lb LB with great speed and cover ability . That free a 220 lb backer to become a 240 lb DE , and the 240 DE could become a 260 Lb interior guy . This approach ( see Jimmy Johnson ) can add instant depth to a team ...our defensive front needs depth.
