Slash and Burn Recruiting , see: Nick Saban

The kids are not signed ...they are committed .

A team can have 100 committments . There is no limit.

But will only sign 27 , in this case .

Maybe CDD and crew are going to these kids they really want ( Ambles , Stone , ect ) and saying ' you better act fast , we only have 3 spots left ' It is one of the oldest sales techniques ' building a sense of urgency '

CDD is building a pool of recruits. On signing day that will sign from the top of their board down to the bottom . They will take the best players they can . When they fill up their 27 spots ...the guys left outside of that 27 are left to go somewhere else.

So if Green , Ambles, Stone and ten other highly rated kids decide they will go to UT ...they guys on the board below them will be pushed down ...and the bottom of the board will not get a chance to go to UT.

I wouldn't worry to much about the guys that are viewed as second tier . If we finish strong , they will never make it . If not ...they are most likely better than walk-ons. Also 0-2 star players are plentiful . If they are picking specific guys ...they see a use for them. That 205 lb safety could become a 220lb LB with great speed and cover ability . That free a 220 lb backer to become a 240 lb DE , and the 240 DE could become a 260 Lb interior guy . This approach ( see Jimmy Johnson ) can add instant depth to a team ...our defensive front needs depth.

worst idea ever: giving players "STARS". Makes every yahoo think they are recruiting gurus cuz they saw a kid on a YouTube video and read a blurb on rivals. Pretty sure anyone offered a ride at this level is capable of doing well, or at the very least have strengths that fill a need. A 3* guy is pretty darn good as well ya know. Last I checked not even the mighty Florida or Bama neither one field a whole team of 5*'s from top to bottom.........or maybe I am just dumb

when recruiting these kids they are telling them how wonderful they are and how much they need them and how they are the next (fill in the blank with last all American at his position). Kids like ambles know anyone will take them at any point. The rest of the suggestions, the biggest problem would be how it could be used against you in recruiting with the three stars etc. "look how they left these guys hanging last year, you don't want to commit to them, they will just leave you out in the cold. But we really want you, if you commit to us, we have a spot for you garanteed!". Idk. Just some thoughts.

Giving a 2 star with no good offers an OV also helps them get a firm committable offer from a lower tier school.

If we do not take a kid from Alabama but he got a full ride to UAB because of our OV, he and more importantly his coach, will be happy with us.

I really liked the OP's point and I agree with him.

This is a great point ...the slash and burn technique is widespread . I think alot of these lower tier kids are offered and told to keep their options open ...if their only other offers are La Tech and Ark State ...they will drop what they are doing for UT . Saban is the master of this . This most likely does not hurt these kids at all ...but as you said makes them more desirable at the next level down

I agree. This might be true. Hadn't thought of it this way. Good thought.

One thing I like about these Two & Three star guys that are committed is where there from.

Hoover, AL (Birmingham) - Gives CDD an in at a traditional HS power. One other player committed to Arkansas, two more to Southern Miss & Central Michigan.

Demopolis, AL - Several 2011 players on the same team as well as an in into the Selma, AL/Meridan, MS area.

Valdosta, GA - A South GA power! Other players committed currently to Florida St., Auburn, Troy, Florida Atlantic and several other uncommitted two and three star guys.

Good point Cagle.

Too many have tunnelvision and fail to look at every aspect of things.

Example...New young coach we have from Memphis and some instantly said they don't like this hire.

I do like it and here's why:

He's a record setting QB from down in Florida so he DOES know how to play QB and read the "D" and he can teach a QB all those many things but he can also pickup a football and SHOW our young QB's exactly what he means and some people learn better and faster from visuals rather than just talking.

PLUS he has ins and contacts in Florida, Memphis, Ark, Mo, Ms, Ect and many other places to help recruit that our Vols haven't done so well in before so he can open more doors for future big recruits for our Vols.

Look at all aspects of coaches and recruits and you'll see much more to like in many cases.

GO VOLS !!!
