Talked about yemi being tough since he walked on the floor.
Said maymon is day to day.
The main thing I got was he said he goes to gyms and tournament to find guys that know how to play basketball and want to play for UT. He of course looks at scorers, but he looks for ball players that can do a little bit of everything. Said that thru aau and hype, players that may not make a college roster think they will play in the nba, but he wants guys that want to play for ut, first and foremost.

Darn. So I guess that means he don't check Rivals and Scouts like we do :(

He actually said he doesn't care if a player is 2 or 4 star and pays no attention to it. He judges by watching them play to see if they can be a piece of a puzzle for the team.
I like it. Outside of fluke ky, basketball needs role players--pickers, defensive players, rebounders, spot up shooters, etc. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians on the floor usually doesn't work out in college ball. Again, outside of kys developmental NBA team.

We have certainty had a string of 4 stars that have not panned out to their hype:

Renaldo Woolridge 4* (ranked #53 overall in the nation)
Philip Jurick 4*
Kenny Hall 4* (ranked #74 overall in the nation)
Jordan McRae 4* (ranked #47 overall in the nation)

What ever happened to Jurick?

In other words he wouldn't see renaldo as a 4* and jump on him for that reason. He'd scout the guy and come to his own conclusion, I like that.

Doesn't mean we aren't going to get some studs in here, I mean look at stokes and now Nichols and hubbs possible for 13'.

Just saying he won't simply recruit a guy because of his "rating" and I like that philosophy.

I think another issue is that people expect every basketball recruit to come in and be world beaters as freshman that score 15 a night if they are a 4 or 5 star. Its not all about that. Not everyone can be the man. Its just the way college ball is these days. Most kids need time to develop into good players (aka Kenny Hall, McRae). Especially if they weren't being developed to their full extent by the previous staff.

I think people forget how young Trae and and Jordan are sometimes. You can't expect players to reach their full potential in their second year! It takes time to develop and under CCM I believe we will finally be able to say we have a coach that can coach up our players. I'm just sitting back and enjoying the process. I expect both guys to be 4 year players. They will be really d@mn good as seniors

I've been VERY pleased overall as of late with McRae. I don't think he was quite ready last season which is why CBP didn't play him much, but now that he's matured more, I'm thinking he's going to be a very valuable player in the future. If not as a starter, then definitely as a SOLID 2nd stringer.

I'm another that's very optimistic about McRae.

Stars seem to be even more overrated in basketball than they are in football. Give me a hustler and a defender along with a coach that knows his X's and O's over a 4* with sights set on the NBA. Look at the likes of Butler, Gonzaga (a decade ago) and even schools like Belmont and Savannah State (they outhustled the sh*t out of us and nearly made it a game). Belmont has hung with Duke in a couple recent games.

McRae has made great strides in his defensive play this season.
His offense will come as the team gets more acclimated to motion.
The more they play together the better they'll get including McRae.
Key players coming in mid season and exiting late didn't help the learning curve.

When McRae is focused he can be a good on-ball defender on the perimeter. He actually has enough lateral quickness to keep someone in front of him and enough length to make it difficult to shoot over him. If he could just figure out how to put on some weight.

Once Mcrae becomes a starter next year, I think his scoring will pick up. I expect him to average in the 14-15 range.

Not sure McRae starts next year. I think McBee has cemented himself at the 2 guard and Golden is obviously the PG. Maymon and Stokes of course, down low. That leaves the SF open for McRae, Richardson and probably the Juco kid to fight over as the starter. While I expect great improvement from McRae, I would also expect the same improvement from Richardson.
