I suppose it's pretty early to make a meaningful guess about our longevity this season and esp. when tourney time arrives, but I would love to hear some thoughts as to just how good this team really is...

Two seasons ago, we were presumably a title contender, but a then dangerous Louisville made us look silly in the tournament. I know a football comparison is moot, but I think back to our '98 title team, playing in the shadow of the Manning era, playing with talent but not the kind anyone thought was title-worthy, and then bam! My point is..could this b-ball team be the one less expected to make it happen but who shocks the world..like the '98 football Vols? Or would it be not so shocking at all?

For anyone who doesn't mind sparing the, "Let's take it one game at a time," or "We'll know a lot more when conference play starts," cliches, I wonder what your best guess is...just how good ARE we?

i think if we play with chemistry, hit shots like we are now, and play hoop to hoop defense we will go elite eight with a chance at the final four. for some reasons this years top teams look vulnerable so far.

I thought we were very talented last year. (Athletic, Tall, Deep) A lot of new players didn't adjust to the system BP wanted to play. So far this year the newer guys seem to be buying in to the program. Hopson seems to have made that step that we hoped he would. We have 4 very good seniors that is pretty rare in major college BB. I see us winning a lot of games this year. I just hope we are able to play great in March when it matters?

I think your right about the Louisville game, if we match up against teams that can play defense and have talented big guys down low, we could be in trouble.

Let's just take it one game at a time then we'll see what we have when conference play starts.

If this team stays healthy, guard play is good, and the defense continues to play with the compassion we've seen so far than the sky is the limit. When UT is on, they can play with anyone in the country. This is a tricky part of the year when you look at teams and schedules. Young teams like UNC & UK are going to get significantly better and then you got teams like Syracuse who are under the radar. Kansas has a very talented group that probably needs a couple of loses to get humble but I see them strong in March as well.

Ah, BPV..I knew that snide little remark at the end of my post would get me in trouble, lol. I predicted I would get this within three replies..so what that it took 5, at least I correctly guessed it would be you. Nice. :p:)

Our numbers look similar to the stats of the first 3 games last year. Slightly higher 3 pt. percentage and few more turnovers. I just wish Purdue's PG Lewis Jackson wasn't injured.

Well what did you expect? Did you seriously think anyone can make an accurate "prediction" about how this team can do after we've played 3 bad teams? Did you want a bunch of "We're going all the way!" responses?

Remember how good our football team looked against WKU? Lets wait until we play some real competition.

So prior to writing it, you predicted that comment would get my reply but wrote it anyway? My reply wouldn't have existed without your trying to preempt reasonable responses.

To those who responded and seemed to understand the spirit of my thread, that it was all in fun and that sometimes it is cool AND ok to throw around the rose-tinted-glasses predictions to get ourselves a little pumped and enjoy the adrenalin..thanks! I was glad to read them and really enjoyed them. I wish everyone understood that sports and being a sports fan isn't all about science, reason and well-founded prognostications as much as it is about the passion and fun of talking about how your team could do the unthinkable, even if there is no real reason yet to think that they could.
For the couple of others who didn't get it and maybe never will...well, anyway...not going there, not worth it.

I think we could be excellent. I predicted as much and was mocked before we abused bad teams. I am concerned because DePaul had two competent guards and we could not press them. Not a good sign. Bobby Maze also looks like he would have trouble turning me over in my church league which is a concern. Goins looks like as he gets healthier he will be a big upgrade defensively over Tabb.

I am still holding out hope, but after watching him a few games, those who told me JP would never ever ever pull his head out of his...and play well look to be right.

I think the vols can go a long way, alot depending on point guard play. I love having 4 seniors starting. If Chism plays good all year, watch out. McBee has a good looking shot and could really help alot. Should be Coach Pearl's best team yet.

Until the halfcourt game improves on both offense and defense... There's no chance of a deep run.

<-- here hoping that Purdue doesn't end up being our Gonzaga of last year. We need some of these early wins with teams like this. Purdue would be the sweetest resume booster because I don't see them loosing that much this year.

Right now Hopson looks lost on offense and defense. He couldnt even dribble the ball across half court with absolutely no one guarding him

Many thanks, Trubbl...say, I have a good friend from Friendsville (that sounded funny) named Larry Peterson. Used to be a preacher, maybe still is, I haven't heard from him in a while. Also he has some kind of construction business.. any chance you know of him? I was in rehab with him in Chattanooga some years ago, funny as that sounds, and he was just the funniest guy. Anyway, you probly don't, but just happened to think of that. Thanks for the word of support! Cya round...
