I have been an avid Royals fan for about 5 years now, ever since I got into baseball in highschool. Ive grown up in Missouri, been to many games, etc..

Every year I think the Royals might just have what it takes to contend for a playoff birth. This year we have a pretty decent roster, but the results are almost the same as last year, and the year before, and the year before that.

With one of the smallest payrolls in baseball, what can the Royals do to make them a better team?

Well I've only made it to one game this year but it was your typical Royals game. Go up a couple of runs in blow it late in the game. Right now we have a good young base of players and the staff isn't terrible (although Meche isn't doing too hot so far)...but the bullpen outside of Soria is horrendous. Gobble gave up a grand slam to lose the game I saw a few days ago.

Dayton is making much better decisions than the old management did and he's definitely taking the team in the right direction. But we've really dug ourselves into the cellar and it may take a few more years to show some real improvement.

What the hell are the Royals doing with Tony Pena Jr. as their SS? He has an OPS+ of -1. I don't think I have ever seen that in a course of 50+ games.

Did you catch TPJ pitching a perfect ninth inning a week or so ago? I say move him to the bullpen. Aviles is filling in pretty nicely at SS now though.

Agreed! Only thing that worries me is that Aviles will get good, and want more money and wind up somewhere like NY.

...Or... he could get Angel Berroa sydrome, and have one good year, then bomb and play the next 3 in AAA. I hope this is not the case :(

Aviles is overachieving right now and no way the Yankees or Red Sox will take him. He's good but he's a 27 year old rookie.

I am a little concerned about the defensive play of my boys in blue...

Last night, they played German in LF (German, a UTIL guy) made little effort last night to make plays and even cost them a loss in the final inning, on top of that, poor play from the SS, who was Pena at the time and Alex Gordon when they ran into each other, in a situation where they could have ended the game.

The Royals managed to pull out the W over Boston, but it was very close and was because of the play of Joakim Soria. KC's bullpen has been pretty good, hitting has been doing the right thing, but the defense just seems weak. With guys like Dejesus and Gathwright out, German will continue to struggle in the outfield.

The Royals have VERY little shot at making the playoffs, if any at all. But with the defense playing the way they are, will they even make an effort with a couple decent win streaks?

Gil Meche is going to retire and give up a guarenteed 12 million bucks this year and will retire. Amazing. Says he doesn't feel like he is earning his paycheck, and is not going thru with surgery.

Never heard of anything like this before.

Has been chronically hurt for a few years now.

Last year was a disaster.

Respect the hell out of that.
